Ice age fossil mammal teeth dating from 56,000 years ago were donated to Brixham by the Thyer family. In 1945 the young teenaged Dennis Thyer lived with his family in the house above the Windmill Hill Cavern and although the cavern was officially closed to the public he managed to find an alternative entrance in the nearby quarry. The lost Bench Bone Cavern of Brixham contained the remains of Hyena, Woolly Mammoth and Neanderthal man - now on display in Torquay Museum. It is one of four bone caves of Torbay researched by Victorian scientist William Pengelly, described by some as one of the earliest fathers of archaeology. The Range is a cold range, firearms will remain unloaded until loaded at a designated loading areas.You can reach The Festering Cove by a jump from the above location (X:70, Y:-239), next to the mushroom portals from Auntie Ethel's lair. Be careful of the exploding mushroom, you can shoot it before jumping. An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering motorists the opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area's trails. Traffic is heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to other visitors and use pullouts when stopping to enjoy the scenery or view wildlife.
