About this deal

Sophie's upbringing proves to be a little unorthodox for a Victorian girl, but the pair prove to be very happy together. (In all honesty, Sophie probably turned out all the better for it). Over the years, the pair receive regular visits over the years from Miss Eliot, who works for the National Childcare Agency. Miss Eliot never fully approves of Charles' parenting, but allows him to carry on raising Sophie. That changes, however, when Sophie turns twelve. Miss Eliot now insists that it is no longer appropriate for Charles to raise a daughter, and Sophie is to be taken to an orphanage.

Books Jacqueline Wilson: 'David Walliams's books are not what I would have wanted as a child' Read More Rooftoppers is set in the Victorian era and opens just after the sinking of the Queen Mary - a liner travelling from France to England. A baby girl is found floating in a cello case, and is taken aboard one of the lifeboats by Charles Maxim, one of the other passengers. Charles is at least reasonably well off, unmarried and quite possibly a little eccentric - but he names his foundling Sophie and chooses to raise her himself. Bate, Matthew (2015-11-03). And the setting? Let’s just say I want to go to Paris again…. now please. I adore Paris and it will always have a special place in my heart so it was so refreshing to read a story set there that wasn’t immediately bogged down by all the clichés that seem to latch themselves onto it. It was lovely to read about the city from a different perspective… one slightly higher than the others, shall we say? Loved Charles her guardian. Did not love the ending. Really, that's it? What happened, mom? You've got some 'splaining to do. Your KS2 class will look at the words and definitions and place them into the context of the story.Your Ks2 class will read all the extracts we have taken to decide what we can learn about Miss Eliot, her mindset and viewpoints. Finally, it's absolutely unbelievable. Yet another reason it bothered me but probably won't bother elementary readers. Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell has the quality and the warmth of a children’s classic. It is a gorgeous story about a little girl in search for her mother. There aren’t many stories like this, not anymore, and as a parent, I’m extremely grateful when I discover one to share with my daughter. Knutson, Kari A; Farley, Frank (1995).
