About this deal

With a smidgen of optimism, I finally decided on a 4 star rating for LET ME LIE. But, in all fairness of honest disclosure, at certain points in the book I felt the dreaded THREE STAR rating looming in the distance. Anna Johnson is trying to adjust to life without her mother and father. Her mother committed suicide a year ago, just a few months after Anna’s father killed himself. They are just trying to get through their day intact so they can get on with whatever it is they want to do. You may say that this is a betrayal – and if you are on friend terms with this person, it will still feel that way – but they may say that it hasn’t done you any harm so what does it matter? Here’s where it gets complicated: Lay is the past tense of lie. So, those examples of lie above could use lay in the past tense:

And you may be in a position in your life where you can’t just change jobs or quit on a whim. It’s not always that simple.Let Me Lie is well written, though each of the characters’ life seems a bit dull, except Murray’s. I like following Murray’s point of view. He’s such a gentle soul and very thorough at investigating. I like his relationship with his wife, even though she’s going through tough times. I like the unexpected twists and turns, though I’m getting a bit irritated with many recent psychological thrillers that I read where the focus is on “you never know what goes on behind closed doors.” The working up to the end is excellent especially when police zoom in on solving the mystery while the lie is unraveling. I recommend everyone to read this book, especially for the thrill towards the end! In the final quatrain, the poet writes the verse that should be graved as his epitaph. Besides, the term “grave” means to fix indelibly in the mind. So, the lines he writes should be engraved in his readers’ minds. When they think about the poet, they should visualize him in the way he wants. Now with a young baby of her own, Anna misses her mother more than ever and starts to question her parents’ deaths. But by digging up their past, she’ll put her future in danger. Sometimes it’s safer to let things lie… Thank you so much to the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review.

Is this someone trying to be cruel? A really bad joke? Or is there something more to her parents deaths/suicide? After all, Anna never really believed either one was capable of taking their own lives. It’s common for a manipulator to throw out anger and try to instigate a fight, because it shifts a conversation to their terms. Just file it away in your mind and keep moving forward. There is no reason to divulge everything you know. The wonderful world of employment can put us in proximity to a variety of people. Some will be great, others will be not so great. But don’t just say, “Is there anything else you’d like to tell me?” This will likely be met with silence.

If they see that the truth is met with a positive response, they may be more willing to be open with you in future. Lies told in close relationships will really sting and will undermine the intimacy and connection you have with your partner. This poem consists of two stanzas. Each stanza has four rhyming lines. The rhyme scheme of the overall piece is AAAB CCCB. It means the first and last line rhymes together. In the first quatrain, the first three lines end with a similar rhyme (“sky”, “lie”, and “die”). The same applies to the first three lines of the second quatrain. Regarding the meter, each line consists of eight syllables except the second line, which consists of seven syllables. In most cases, the stress falls on the second syllable of each foot. Thus, the poem is composed in iambic tetrameter with a few variations. Let’s have a look at the metrical scheme of the first stanza:

Audio narrator: 5+ star! The narrator was excellent and increased my connection and sense of enjoyment. I loved listening to this! It is a lyric poem written in a regular rhyme scheme. The first-person speaker (Stevenson) talks about his final wish in this poem.

Similarly, lies told by family members will probably cause a great deal of pain, heartache, and soul searching. Why did they lie? You see, a lie is never told in pure isolation. Someone will have a reason for lying, even if those reasons may not seem very reasonable. First of all, many thanks to Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with an advance review copy of this book via Edelweiss AND a physical copy! All opinions are my own. Now with a young baby of her own, Anna misses her mother more than ever and starts to ask questions about her parents’ deaths. But by digging up the past, is she putting her future in danger? Sometimes it’s safer to let things lie . . .
