About this deal

It was never really the ‘stories’ as such that engrossed me so much in her books as the portraits of her characters that were all so vivid and alive I would often think about something that one of them had done and think that it was someone I actually KNEW who had done it. Warm and uplifting, Milo's Monster is an inspiring story about dealing with feelings of jealousy. It's the ideal starting point for helping children to build strong friendships and say goodbye to jealous feelings. What an interesting story! I love how jealousy is pictured as a Green-Eyed Monster one must fight within. Dealing with my girls at home jealousy is unavoidable! I get to remind them to crush the monster and apologize no matter how hard it is. I am a passionate reader of psychology and spiritual books, and as a result, I appreciate writers who bring these issues to children as a sweet, kind lullaby. Read the author’s letter at the start of the story and use some of his tips to create a poster to teach people about jealousy and what they can do to deal with those types of feelings.

It's fascinating how, our days, writers teach children how to deal with feelings and self-expression through their stories.

Who or what was your biggest influence in deciding to become a writer? I just love making up stories and drawing pictures – it was inevitable. Not that I’d get published of course, but even if I hadn’t got published I’d still sit there coming up with ideas and writing them down. It’s just what I do. Rabe follows a young girl through her first 12 days of kindergarten in this book based on the familiar Christmas carol. The Blonde Lady asked him to sit down, and after he took his seat, Milosz asked, out of observation, "Are you about to move out?" She asked him why he came to that conclusion, and he answered that the room was empty and the lady had a big bag with her, which is why he thought she was moving out. Can Milo find a way to free himself from the monster and repair his friendship? Even if I am an adult right now, I can still identify the feeling of jealousy as a monster always talking bad in my ears.

David Almond introduces his new picture book, A Way to the Stars, a story about perseverance and finding a way to make dreams come true. How did Milo react in this story? What might have been a better way to deal with Jay’s new friendship?until his stomach grew hungry, and then he returned home. When he arrived, Milosz readily told the other boys what he saw and they immediately came up with a plan to catch the Blonde Lady so they could prove Grimmer's innocence to the police. While this is a fairly bland treatment compared to Deborah Lee Rose and Carey Armstrong-Ellis’ The Twelve Days of Kindergarten (2003), it basically gets the job done.

Tenma and Grimmer wasted no time finding Miloš. Their efforts directed them to the red light district, but they did not find him easily. When they have reached the end of it, their hope of finding Milosz had quite diminished, until Grimmer spotted him by the edge of the bridge, looking over the rushing current of the river (because it was raining), about to jump over. It starts with Milo and his best friend Jay, they play together all the time and have lots of fun! Until one day, Suzi moves in next door. All of a sudden, jay starts to hang out with Suzi and milo starts to feel angry. His sadness and anger grows as he withdraws from his friend, it grows into a monster that follows him around and tries to convince him that his friend jay isn’t his friend anymore and that Suzi is taking him away.

Meet Milo and his monster

When Suzi spoke to him (communication of an issue), he did not see her as a threat anymore; she expressed how Milo's best friend felt, making him realise they were both missing each other. When Milo goes to Jay’s house again and discovers he is out with Suzi, he starts to grow jealous and think that Jay doesn’t want to be his friend anymore. Then, a green-eyed monster pops right out of Milo. How has Tom Percival used different shades of grey in the illustrations? Could you use similar techniques to draw attention to more colourful parts of a picture?
