The fourth and final team comprised: chair Bryan Rodriguez-Curtis, buyer at Harvey Nichols; Keegan Menezes, spirits consultant; and Zalorén González Fonteles, assistant manager of Hometipple. Four panels of esteemed judges gathered at the Punch Room at the London Edition to consider this year’s entries I think that sweet spot is the 10‐12‐year classification,” said Dixon. “The brandies in this flight were still great products though.”

With the right approach and a healthy marketing budget, a brandy producer could pitch their products into the minds of a new generation of drinkers. As our latest taste test discovered, the liquid on the market is full of promise – and taste. To further bolster quality it has taken on two consultants, Frenchman Jerome Baret for its sparkling wines, and Italian Federico Giotto for an ever-widening and innovative range of still wines. Three Silvers were also presented to: Domecq; Domecq 8 Años; and Noble 1954. “These were all pretty well‐made products that do what they say on the tin,” noted Dixon. Starting from the idea of creating a more intense version of the famous Bardar cognac, we selected the best oak barrels in which distillates have undergone a long process of aging.A solid flight of Gold medals followed as the tasting turned towards the World Whisky flight. Old Hunter’s Bourbon Cask 40% scooped one of three Gold medals for being a “decent mixing whisky” due to flavours of “stone fruit, a little vanilla, and a “wine-like character”. The remaining two Gold medals were collected by St Kilian Distillers, one of which went to the German producer’s Peated – Rich & Smoky bottling. The judges praised this whisky’s “good mouthfeel” and “lingering finish with wispy smoke”.

A trio of Gold medals were also praised, including Highclere Castle Gin, which was described as having notes of “citrus peel on the palate, complementing aromas of pepper and cardamom”. A Silver medal completed the first round. “A lot of these entrants were moving away from being heavily citrus-forward, which was refreshing to see,” noted Wrelton. All demonstrated that Purcari is equally adept working with international varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as it is with native varieties and ‘local’ varieties such as Romania’s Feteasca Neagra and Georgia’s Saparavi.

In 2012, to mark 20 years of independence from the USSR for Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine it came up with a new wine, Freedom Blend, “that embodies the thirst for freedom” of these countries, with the first vintage appearing two years later. A red blend of Saparavi (Georgia), Rare Neagra (Moldova) and Bastardo (Ukraine) all sourced from within Moldova, the result is a full-on wine, with hints of tobacco leaves, spice and cassis. Proceeds from the current 2020 Tribute vintage all go to support Ukraine, according to Remus Turcan, Purcari’s international development manager. Five Gold medals were also celebrated in this round, including Lex by Nemiroff. The judges found this vodka to have a “sweet and vibrant nose”, leading to “a hint of zestiness” on the palate. Four additional Silver medals made for a strong round.
