About this deal

No manual band assigning for devices (Some devices which should be using 5Ghz isn’t and goes to 2.4Ghz. Should have an option to assign per device band and this helps with Media device not falling into 2.4Ghz.) No wall mount. This is very frustrating. However, they have done it strategically because you get a better range if you place it on a table as the walls absorb radio frequency. But still so many people, like me, have no option other than to wall mount the device.

The W7200 uses the TP-Link Tether app for iOS and Android mobile devices, and can also be managed via a web-based console. The mobile app opens to an Overview screen, which contains an Internet icon and displays a list of online and offline devices that have joined the network. Tap the Internet icon to view a list of network nodes, their location, and which clients are currently connected to each node. Here, you can assign bandwidth priority and flip a switch to deny access to any client. In contrast, the Orbi boasts AC3000 Wi-Fi speeds, the BT Whole Home has AC2500 and the Velop has AC2200. As such, for raw speed the Deco is someway behind its rivals, though by the very nature of distrubuted Wi-Fi systems, this isn’t always noticeable in conventional tests.Next, I tested performance from a floor above (Test 1), followed by two separate locations a floor above that (Test 2 and Test 3). Upgradability and Mix&Match (Can upgrade the deco network in future by adding any of the deco router models is cool) It’s important to note that when shopping for gadgets and technology products, it can be tempting to go for the lowest price possible. However, be wary of retailers that offer prices that seem too good to be true. Some less reputable retailers may sell counterfeit or low-quality products, which can be dangerous and not perform as well as the genuine product.

Each Deco X20 unit is set up as the host or satellite in the installation process, and each have four internal antennas. As is the case with its competitors, none can be aimed or replaced. Based on Qualcomm’s Networking Pro 400 chipset, the Deco X20 is powered by a 1GHz quad-core processor. It carries 4GB of RAM and 1GB of solid-state storage of its firmware and commands. Able to connect up to 150 devices, the Deco X20 has an AX1800 rating, meaning that it's rated at a peak throughput of 1.8Mbps. The only other feature is a single light on the top that glows in different colours and flashes in a variety of patterns to indicate the node’s status. Altogether it adds up to a system that will get the job done for most users, but it could really do with a bit of tweaking to make for a truly seamless setup process for all.Clients need to support 802.11k/v and may require additional setup. Performance may vary depending on the client device.

Darker green areas on the map represent the strongest signal measurements, and lighter green and yellow areas show a weaker signal. The circles represent the location of the router and the satellite node. As shown on the map, the Deco W7200 system had no trouble delivering a relatively strong signal to all corners of our test home.

Vertical range is not good. Horizontally, the router will cover a large area. But if you put another router just above or below one router on the next Floor, the range is still not good. My connection speed was dropped by 50%. It works but not as great as I expected it to be. Maybe it was due to concrete slab floor. I am not sure though. Still good till 300mbps speeds anywhere. An important aspect of this new breed of wireless solutions is that they’re not the traditional routers and extenders that the more tech savvy are used to. Gone are they unruly antennas of yore, replaced by stylish designs and simple interfaces.

However, it falls into a slightly awkward middle-ground between the cheaper but faster and easier to setup BT Whole Home, and more expensive but even faster and more capable alternatives such as the Netgear Orbi and Linksys Velop. It’s not a bad option but as a latecomer to the mesh shin-dig, it hasn’t brought a good enough party favour to out-do the other guests. Setting up the Deco system is largely very simple. Like the Linksys Velop, it’s all done via an app on your phone, with both Android and iPhone supported. You plug in each node in turn and the app will automatically connect to them via Bluetooth, so it can configure it and connect it to the overall system. The TP-Link Deco M5 is incredibly easy to set up, and the coverage it provides from the three units is a genuine revelation.
