About this deal

Other references that are interwoven into the film include the name of the John Houseman character "Mr. Machen" (a reference to Welsh horror fantasist Arthur Machen); a radio report that mentions Arkham Reef; and the town's coroner Dr. Phibes was named after the titular character of the horror films starring Vincent Price from the early 1970s. Stevie's message to "look for the fog" through the radio is a reference to the final scene in The Thing from Another World, where the reporter character grabs the radio and tells the world to "watch the skies" for extra-terrestrials.

This film provides examples of:

Our Ghosts Are Different: These ones are fully corporeal and capable of stabbing people, with the appearances of rotting corpses. They can only travel through the fog, and don't appear capable of communication. They only appear once it's midnight on the hundred year anniversary of their deaths, and vanish once a debt is paid and they've claimed six victims. Adaptational Villainy: The addition of a pre-credits Distant Prologue, in which Blake and his undead pals are implied to have killed the four men who torched their ship immediately after their crime rather detracts from the notion that they're Tragic Villain-types: if, after all, they already did avenge themselves upon their actual killers, it's a lot harder to sympathize with their retribution against townsfolk who know nothing about a century-old atrocity, and whose ancestors probably didn't even live on the island at the time. I can not believe how much I fell in love with the world in the book. The post-apocalyptic feel, the steam powered technology, the extremely hard life in the slums and how resilient and resourceful Chess and his friends were.

The author makes it clear from the start that the character's actions are driven by a need to save a woman dear to them: Mrs. E. But an explanation for her importance to the characters is late in coming, making it difficult for the reader to form an attachment to her. Everytown, America: Despite being a seaside town, what we see of Antonio Bay fits the trope. The festival even looks a bit like a 4th of July celebration. Thomas, Kevin (February 2, 1980). " 'The Fog': Panic at Point Reyes". Los Angeles Times. p.8 – via Newspapers.com. Lester comes in as the deputy assigned to be sure Kathy gets out of the home that's no longer hers. Love at first sight! Lame-o Lester and Loser Kathy...surely the white trash Romeo and Juliet! What has given me trouble are the actions taken by Massoud, Kathy and Lester to resolve the dispute. Their actions are too extreme. Alternate solutions seem more realistic, more reasonable to me. Yet my solutions would result in a less dramatic story. In my view, the conclusion becomes too cinematic. In fact, in 2003, the book was turned into a popular American drama film starring Ben Kingsley, Jennifer Connelly, Ron Eldard and Shohreh Aghdashloo. The last played Massoud’s wife. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards. To say that it was a good call on my part might just be a huge understatement. The 2018 publication of the book might've slipped under my radar but I am really happy to have discovered said novel and the author now. Ominous Fog: The premise of the film. It moves against the wind and causes electricity and phone lines to go dead. For a horror novel, The Fog isn’t particularly scary, but it’s an excellent action novel with plenty of violent surprises. It reminded me of an environmental disaster story, a medical thriller, and a high-adventure rescue mission. Other sections recalled a modern zombie adventure or even my favorite Able Team installment, Army of Devils by G.H. Frost. There were also several gratuitous and graphic sex scenes, if that’s your bag. Boléro Effect: Used to wonderful ominous effect in the score when the fog is rolling into town and reaching the lighthouse and the church where the protagonists are seeking shelter. The music starts off quiet and builds to a loud crescendo with a percussion and synth beat playing repeatedly over it. Fatal Family Photo: Al Williams is a rare case where we get to meet his family, or in this case his wife.

Misplaced Retribution: The Fog Zombies are acting out of revenge against the town that murdered them, seeking to kill six people specifically, but kill indiscriminately. They then leave after their kill count is satisfied, and even slay the grandson of the conspiracy ringleader, even after he willingly returned the stolen gold to them. The Fog Diver is the fantasy MG I've been looking for all year. It's fun, and it has heart and danger and complete originality. I loved it! Mama Bear: Stevie tries anyway. When she sees the fog heading towards her house, she desperately screams into her radio for someone to rescue Andy. But she also defies this in a way; on the radio she apologises to Andy for not coming herself, because she needs to warn the rest of the town.Etchison, Dennis, ed. (1991b).
