It was Teddy who first noticed that the shade of the ash tree was getting longer and asked me what time it was. I looked at my watch and was surprised to see it was quarter after two. Rob Reiner found four young boys who were the characters we played. I was awkward and nerdy and shy and uncomfortable in my skin and sensitive, and River was cool and smart and passionate and even at that age kind of like a father figure to some of us, Jerry was one of the funniest people I had ever seen in my life, either before or since, and Corey was unbelievably angry and in an incredible amount of pain and had a terrible relationship with his parents. King's classic story, adapted into the movie Stand By Me, now available for the first time from Hodder in standalone form, as part of their exciting Stephen King reissue programme for 2021. SanSone, Arricca Elin (October 10, 2019). "How Many of These '80s Movies Do You Remember?". Good Housekeeping. Apt Pupil--a golden California schoolboy and an old man whose hideous past he uncovers enter into a fateful and chilling mutual parasitism. Adapted into the 1986 classic film Stand By Me, The Body is an iconic exploration of friendship, loneliness and adventure, an unforgettable coming-of-age story by master chronicler of small-town adolescence and universal experience, Stephen King. This is a scary realization when you are young - that your friends are not good for you. I remember getting that feeling at around twelve, the age the boys in this book are, and I remember how unsettling that realization was. At that time it feels like friendships are forever, and that things that connect you to other people are there to stay - and realizing how easy and even necessary it can be to break those bonds is quite unsettling. " You always know the truth, because when you cut yourself or someone else with it, there's always a bloody show."Lyne was going to direct the film, but had promised himself a vacation following the production of 9½ Weeks, [16] [17] and would not be available to start production until the spring of 1986. [15] Reiner was better known at the time for playing Michael Stivic in All in the Family and had just started a directing career, making comedies like This Is Spinal Tap and The Sure Thing. He was sent the script by Scheinman, [15] and his initial reaction was the script had promise but "no focus". [3] After Lyne withdrew from the project, Reiner signed on to direct in September 1984. [15] In a 2011 interview, Reiner discussed his realization that the film should focus on the character of Gordie: Introduction 'So what's this all about, Vern?' Teddy asked. He and Chris were still playing cards; I was reaching for a detective magazine. Vern Tessio said: 'You guys want to go and see a dead body?' Everybody stopped. Gordie Lachance and his three friends are always ready for an adventure. So when a boy dies out in the forest, it's a chance to see something they have never seen in their lives: a dead body. But for the four boys, their journey will teach them as much about life as about death. As they face the dangers on their way, they begin to learn what it is to grow up — and nothing will ever be the same for them again. With the enormous success of books such as The Shining, Salem's Lot and Misery, Stephen King is one of the world's highest-earning writers. There are over 150 million copies of his novels in print and he makes two million dollars a month from his books and the films made of his books. He grew up in a poor family in Portland, Maine in the USA, but he went to university and became a teacher. However, he gave up teaching and became a full-time writer in 1973 after his first novel, Carrie. The Body is different from most of King's work. It is not a horror story, although there are a few unpleasant moments. It is based on his own childhood in Maine, and shows a softer side of his' imagination. It was filmed in 1986 as Stand by Me, with River Phoenix as Chris Chambers. You can also read Stephen King's The Breathing Method and Misery in Penguin Readers. IV The boys later come to a high railroad trestle. Everyone in the group is wary of crossing the bridge lest a train come along but Teddy insists they can make the crossing safely and not have to walk five miles upstream to the nearest bridge. When the boys reach the halfway point, a train comes and Vern and Gordie are forced to run for their lives, just barely making it across. Chris and Teddy seem to be more admiring of them after they were nearly killed. a b "Stand by Me". Rotten Tomatoes. Archived from the original on November 11, 2020 . Retrieved September 23, 2022. This time around I loved this book the only thing stopping it from being a 5 star read is that its in my opinion too short. I want more. As an adult I read this book in a completely different way and I'm sure that I would view the movie differently now as well.
