HDCP enable/disable function turns off the unit's HDCP capability. Some computers choose to encrypt their output even when non-protected content is displayed, such as desktop images or presentations. This function forces the source to send an unencrypted signal if the content itself is also unprotected. It therefore helps technicians to integrate such laptops into a non-HDCP AV environment. Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is a metadata standard that lets display devices like monitors, televisions, and projectors communicate their capabilities to the video source. When using HDMI, the EDID from your television tells the video source what the dimensions of the screen are. EDID information is typically exchanged when the video source starts up. The DDC specifications define a +5V supply connection for the source to provide power to a display's EDID circuitry so that communication can be enabled, even if the display is powered off. At startup, the video source will send a request for EDID over the DDC. The EDID/DDC specifications support hot plug detection, so that EDID information can also be exchanged whenever a display is reconnected to a video source. Hot plug detection is not supported for VGA, but is supported in digital interfaces including DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort. For these interfaces, the display device will supply a voltage on an HPD - Hot Plug Detect pin, to signal to the video source device that it is connected. The absence of a voltage on the HPD pin indicates disconnection. The video source device monitors the voltage on the HPD pin and initiates EDID requests as it senses incoming voltage. EDID Issues

EDID records the information of a display such as the dimensions/screen size, original resolution, color properties, frequency range limits, etc. EDID handshakes enable the information exchange and when the computer gets it, it will deliver the image that fits the display. EDID is a VESA standard data format that contains information about the display’s manufacturer, screen size, native resolution, color characteristics, frequency range limits and more. Once the source receives this information, it can then generate the necessary video characteristics to match the needs of the display. EDID is often used with a computer graphics card as the source device. Additionally, HDTV receivers, DVD and Blu-Ray players, LCD displays and digital TVs can read EDID and output the required video format. What Is DDC (Display Data Channel)? If you load the EDID onto a port that does not have a display attached make sure you select the correct port.
