About this deal

Until he discovers rapping, and he's COMPLETELY hooked. It's not long before James starts writing his own raps about everything - from music and cakes to his giant pet rabbit, Graham!

The comedian’s book, which was published last week, follows James, who is worried about everything, and not even his favourite hobby of baking can help. Then he discovers rapping… My agent kind of says, ‘Have a great trip, I look forward to hearing whatever it is you've come up with while you’re away!’. So on this particular holiday, I thought of the story of James, and then I didn't think anything more of it, I just thought that'll be a cool thing to think about later. And then as I carried on, it kind of started hooking into me. And then I wrote the beats for the story on a napkin on the plane on the way home.” We’re with James every step of the way and readers will enjoy his eventual triumph as much as he does. Both he and Brukka show us that being true to yourself is what matters and that’s something we could all take to heart. Romesh is currently in the middle of his biggest stand-up tour to date, ‘The Cynic’s Mixtape’, which sold out theatres in record time across the UK, including a phenomenal 12-nights at Hammersmith Apollo. Revealing how he came to write a children’s book, the stand-up told Chris: “It kind of happened by accident, I was on holiday. A lot of the time, whenever I'm on holiday is when I have an idea for a new show, or a bit stand-up or something like that.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. I can see children enjoying the story given the setting and how big rap and grime music is at the moment. The writing could have been a little more fleshed out but then this is a children’s book and the basic writing style will probably appeal to its intended audience and help them to connect with the book. I know that I do loads of stuff, but what I can tell you is, whatever you think of the end product, I try my hardest. This infectious and hysterical read is ideal for readers aged 8+ and explores the hilarious and whole-hearted take on the colliding worlds of rap battles and baking! From comedy superstar Romesh Ranganathan comes a hilarious and heartfelt tale that proves rap battles and baking muffins really can mix.

Schoolboy James Perera loves baking, except for his ‘Doom Dessert’, Bread and Butter Pudding Souffle which he loves eating but can’t for the life of him recreate, although it may have something to do with him only trying to bake it when he’s angry or upset, which is a lot recently. Grime artist Brukka (who looks a lot like Romesh in the illustrations) is looking for young talent and James thinks that this could be his big break, but with everything going on he isn’t sure he has the confidence to make it.

When James hears someone rapping in the playground one breaktime, he's completely hooked and starts writing his own raps featuring all of his favourite things – music, his giant pet rabbit Graham and of course – cake! Romesh Ranganathan commented, “I have wanted to write a children's book for ages but only if it combined baking and rapping – thankfully I have managed to make that dream come true. I came up with the idea on holiday and annoyed my family talking about it non-stop! It's been fantastic working with Puffin and James to create Lil’ Muffin Drops The Mic. I'm excited for it to create a generation of baking rappers or baking Karate experts or dancing bakers. This book is about being whatever and whoever you want!”
