About this deal

Going along with this, they are also easier to manufacture, and the turnaround time is much lower so products can get on the shelves much quicker.

The special oils in the lead, along with other binders, allow for dense, thick strokes without having to apply significant amounts of pressure. If you follow the link you can see my speed drawing of Buzz Lightyear, fully demonstrating the performance of the colored pencils and markers together. With the exception of a few colors, companies may use different names which only confuses the matter for an artist mixing a bunch of pencils.

Most of the colours go on paper (I find using vellum surface to be best for harder core, oil-based pencils such as Derwent Lightfast and Art-n-Fly) like butter, which, to be honest, surprised me in such a good way.

These Derwent Lightfast Colored Pencils are definitely one of the best oil-based colored pencils on the market. Personally, I love using oil-based ones rather than wax based coloured pencils, due to the texture, how they blend and the vibrance of the colours.

Binder is the material that holds the pigment together so that it can be applied to a drawing surface. The tips of oil pencils are much more resistant to breaking than wax pencils, so techniques like burnishing where the artist applies pressure to create thick layers of pencil can be achieved without breakage. This is due to the number of layers that is required for the drawing to achieve techniques like colour blending. However, one of the hardest cores I have ever tested and reviewed is perhaps the Derwent Artists core and yet this is market as a wax pencil, but its hardness is down to the type of wax used, binding agent and many other factors. Everything I’ve read online says that they’re oil-based and they feel oil-based as there’s no wax bloom and they’re easier to blend than wax-based pencils. For me personally, given what I already know and will be writing a piece on, I much prefer describing the core in terms of softness or hardness.

I can recommend this set to any artist as their starter kit or even as a gift because it is affordable and an excellent quality set with many benefits. Finally, before moving on, I would like to make it very clear that neither of the two individuals I spoke to divulge any information regarding ingredients, ratios etc that go into producing the cores. The tendency of the beginner is to mark lightly and use the white of the paper to create lighter values. Each pencil barrel is lacquered a deep Burgundy Matt finish with silver print along the barrel side, the top of the pencil finished off with a three quarter inch flash of color, indicating the pencils pigment. Read on for this Art-n-Fly 48 oil-based coloured pencils review to find out how these stack against Derwent Lightfast.
