About this deal

I had to go back and reread the plot synopsis to understand why the HELL there was a scene with 9/11 of all things! I didn't get what all this meant, I didn't get where the plot was going, I didn't get the purpose of the book and I didn't get the whole Egypt parallelism. The archeological vibes were on point, and there was peace in the desert paintings while waiting for the tomb to reveal its secrets. First, thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review this copy of Hypericon's English-translated edition.

While much of the story follows the romantic relationship between Teresa and Ruben, I found the relationship a distraction against the story's clear initial structure (much as Ruben is to Teresa's life), but not quite in a way that is complimentary.Hypericum by Manuele Fior is a good fit for those seeking a poignant and visually stunning exploration of love, history, and personal growth, with a focus on the transformative power of time and the interconnectedness of human experiences. I will also say that the random German and Spanish being thrown in, with no translation on the bottom of the page, was very aggravating. The muted color palleted and movement lines appropriately engage the written story, and I’d say if this was replaced by a different art style I may not have enjoyed the reading experience as much. Selten habe ich eine so schöne Graphic Novel gelesen - am liebsten würde ich mir jeden zweiten Frame in Postergröße ausdrucken und an die Wand hängen, thank you very much.

There’s a lot that is not said on the pages, and while as the reader I can fill in the gaps with a more hopeful take on a tense and manipulative relationship, I feel like Teresa’s journey would benefit from greater nuance prior to the resolution. I got rather confused in how these two stories gel together apart from being about the discoveries from the tomb. I've been writing criticism about comics since the early 2000s, as well as about illustration, animation and imagetext relationships.

Overall, a very enjoyable read in which my only critiques are that some connections felt like they were included a little more as asides than subtly interwoven threads - especially the namesake plant which felt thrown in at the end of the story versus having been woven into the text earlier. I did find the flips between Teresa's present and the other archeologist team in the 1920s to be interesting, but it took me reading the synopsis to realize the perspective switch was supposed to be what Teresa reading in her book. I would recommend this graphic novel for its: thoughtfulness, novel structure, heavy realism toward both romantic relationships and living abroad, and of course for it's well-executed illustrations.

Overall, I would say that I liked this graphic novel but would have preferred a lesser focus on the relationship, and a greater exploration of Teressa's coming-of-age narrative running parallel with the historical ones. Ruben’s life, however, is totally lacking in straight lines, He just wanders from one thing or place to another, but somehow, they hit it off. b GDPR, we will pass on your data to a commissioned collection company if our payment claim has not been settled despite a previous reminder. I think they were meant to show that Teresa's and Reubens's relationship is mostly physical in the beginning, but it felt like it was tossed in just to add drama. The other story has an Italian woman named Teresa getting the opportunity of a lifetime to help an exhibition in Berlin of the Tutankhamen’s treasures in 2001.

In this respect, the data protection declaration of the respective payment service provider applies. In places, especially in the wider shots of scenes set in Egypt, the art is like fresh watercolors; elsewhere, it tends to be a bit simpler. But it really threw me out of the story every time it happened and I sat there trying to remember what a word meant in German.
