About this deal

When it comes to caring for temperate carnivorous plants, including sundews and pitcher plants, there are three important things to keep in mind. In 1875, Charles Darwin published a 400-page monograph on carnivorous plants that shook the scientific establishment. They trap their pray by luring them in with glistening, sweet secretions that stick to unfortunate insects. Cut off dead flowers with scissors – and in the case of Venus flytraps and pitcher plants, cut off the dead traps if they go black – this often happens in autumn and winter.

The exact combination of ingredients and their ratios are a matter for debate, and different formulas will suit different species, so it is worth experimenting. The Butterworts: You can find Butterworts ( Pinguicula) throughout the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest concentration being found in Mexico and Central America. It has attractive red and yellow speckled pitchers, and is a particularly good candidate for a houseplant. Several of the RHS Gardens grow them, in particular Wisley, which has a wide range in its glasshouse and on the rock garden.

Venus flytrap ( Dionaea muscipula) is one of the most frequently grown carnivorous plants – people can't get enough of their snapping leaves. Most need good light levels and won’t thrive in shade, however tropical jungle species prefer a partially shaded position. Carnivorous plants can be found on every continent except Antarctica and there are many species native to the UK including sundews, butterworts and bladderworts.

Many carnivorous plants can be grown indoors, in a bright position but not usually in direct sun, as the leaves can scorch through glass. But while it's great for a nutrient top-up, carnivory doesn't replace the need for photosynthesis and root systems.Plants growing outside, especially those in containers, may need regular watering in summer and in long dry spells. Most people are familiar with well-known carnivorous plants such as Venus flytraps, but there are lots of other beautiful types to grow, too. Alternatively, use a container with few or no drainage holes, such as a butler sink with the plug in.

Troubleshooting Tales: Encounter common challenges in carnivorous plant cultivation and explore troubleshooting tips to overcome issues. For outdoor growing in the UK, hardy species of sundews ( Drosera), butterworts ( Pinguicula) and trumpet pitcher ( Sarracenia) are good choices. Like everything we create here at Growlands the soil formula is created to give the best results, so if you’re looking for the best soil for Venus flytraps then our carnivorous plant compost has you covered.multifida, the Cape sundew ( Drosera capensis) has many strap-like leaves covered in sticky hairs that trap insect prey. Discover the optimal growing conditions, from soil composition to light requirements, and unlock the mysteries of creating an environment that mimics their native homes. If you’d like to dive deeper into the 170+ species or calculate the requirements of a specific plant, I’d suggest bookmarking my Nepenthes Interactive Guide. Common butterwort ( Pinguicula vulgaris) grows throughout the UK on bogs, fens, wet heaths and moors. Understand the diverse species within this genus and their unique methods of luring, trapping, and digesting insects.

Dormancy: Not required, though your plant may slow down or stop growing depending on the light levels. Carnivorous plants don’t like drying out during the growing season, and can be scorched by direct sun in summer when grown under glass. Tender species that come from the tropics, however, need warm, humid conditions and often lower light levels. ICPS Facebook forum -- The forum is essentially inactive but the information from old posts is invaluable. This well-balanced easy-to-apply spray can be used on every house plant or indoor plant, from the likes of the spider plants, aloe vera, peace lilys, jade plants, weeping figs, and other common indoor plants.

Growing plants from seeds is fun, lots of fun, and growing carnivorous plants from seeds is no exception. The chemicals in tap water, particularly in hard water areas, can be toxic to them and so should not be used. Germination can take several months and then the tiny seedlings stay tiny possibly until the following year.
