Ignore what everyone else is saying and absolutely do not read The Paper Palaceby Miranda Cowley Heller. His parenting style combined benign neglect with instruction in the flora and fauna of the Cape, punctuated by disappearances when he went off his bipolar meds and/or fell in love again. Purposefully-unlikable and flawed characters are common with litfic, so if you don’t like the book “because of the characters,” the feedback is, “That’s the whole point!Now, as adults, their relationship is tense, the air thick and uncomfortable when they're in the same room together. I loved that this book had a Halloween setting, I haven’t read many books set on Halloween, and the way that this story incorporated it into this story was really clever.

The way in which Adam Stower’s illustrations perfectly complimented David Walliams’ story added an extra layer to this awesome book. Even as the novel builds to the revelations, the focus is kept fiercely on the aftermath and the recovery: Ken’s therapy, Abby’s artwork. Little Monsters is packed with humour, warmth and wonderful characters and has been an absolute pleasure to illustrate. I was also a bit frustrated by the fact that all the women in the book are defined in large part by their motherhood.As the novel opens, Adam is approaching his seventieth birthday, staring down his mortality and fading relevance. Ackerman describes the strong maternal instincts owls display and outlines the environmental threats to these entrancing birds.

The seven siblings of the Shaw clan are affected in different ways by the death – possibly from suicide – of their depressed mother during their childhood; alcoholism, failed marriages and teen sexual abuse follow. The novel as a whole seems to have an idealogical and political alignment with one particular character, but the others aren’t entirely demonized or undercut. This book accompanied on a book tour of my own and I looked forward to the moment I could hop into bed with it each night. Alternatively, we suggest that you visit your local library and request to borrow a copy from a friendly librarian, if you cannot find the book on its shelves. Turning 70 doesn’t stop Adam from thinking of himself as dashing, but it does annoy him that he’s being forced to retire.I felt very sorry for him when the ogre told him he would never, EVER be a monster but this was the only sad part and it turned out very happy in the end.
