The language of the Beaker People was a variant of Proto-Indo-European, which had two linguistic genders -- animate and inanimate. Professor Alice Roberts is an academic, author and broadcaster, specialising in human anatomy, physiology, evolution, archaeology and history. In another 100 years, one must wonder if a then archeologist will similarly heap such scathing criticism on today's archaeologists consuming the last threads of DNA for our time and place primitive analysis? Ancestors' is focused on the evolution and methods up from the grave digging, treasure hunting, and carnival attraction-seeking roots. It explores forgotten journeys and memories of migrations long ago, written into genes and preserved in the ground for thousands of years.

Alice Roberts argues in Ancestors that we need to consciously set aside our own bias and try to evaluate archaeological remains on their own terms. e 1-star, the author's atheist/ anti-church droning and never missing an opportunity to inject wokeness. This makes it quite a theoretical book, in that it addresses the ways that prehistory derived from archaeology gets it wrong. We might hear about the excavation of some odd exterminated village in Germany from 8000 yrs ago as evidenced by a mass grave of familial-related and mutilated corpses. In the 20th Century, society was largely defined by a division into male and female, and property ownership was the key to social class. The reality of multiple, miserable, slow-death diseases is in the bones simply had to direct the trajectory of civilization. But, would the pre-archaeology topic have piqued public interest for a hundred years to advance the study to modern standards? I was able to forgive these shortcomings however, when in the final chapters, she discussed Pitt Rivers.

And the best overview history of the classical world The Classic World The Epic History of Greece and Rome by Robin Lane Fox. This is a subject about which she has been involved as broadcaster and author for many years and about which she is both authoritive and a great communicator. In 2002, not far from Amesbury in southern Wiltshire and a mile or so from Stonehenge, archaeologists were investigating the site of a new school when they discovered something remarkable. This is a good thing, because it means she has to paint word pictures of the burials, and her writing is beautiful. Roberts is a prolific TV presenter, and Ancestors skilfully deploys the arts of screen storytelling: narrative pace, a sense of mysteries being unfolded.

Perhaps the important divide for the Beaker people was into animate/singular and neuter/collective, rather than owned wealth or male/female? It requires imagination, as well as scientific expertise, to read the “stories written in stone, pottery, metal and bone”. She is certainly not recommending that we try to fit those remains into 21st century gender categories, but uses that as an example to show how 19th and 20th century ideas of gender and class have affected archaeological theories from those times. Ancestors is a carefully thought out and well-expressed argument for a new way of doing prehistory -- trying to prevent the shape of present-day society from dictating how we understand the past. This is a detailed and richly imagined account of the deep history of the British landscape, which brings alive those “who have walked here before us”, and speaks powerfully of a sense of connectedness to place that is rooted in common humanity: “we are just the latest human beings to occupy this landscape”.
