About this deal

Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash's first four albums with Rubin. With each track being essential listening, there is refreshingly no filler material to pad out the collection.

I've heard sets of outtakes before where people take an "it is what is is" attitude and you're just thankful to have a few extra tracks to listen to even if they aren't very good. Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description. Few artists can boast a catalogue as diverse, memorable and remarkable as Johnny Cash and this collection of unreleased and inspirational material is as vital as the myriad albums and compilations which preceded it. Compiled by producer Rick Rubin, this collection contained mostly previously unreleased material recorded during the four albums (a fifth was released posthumously) that Cash had cut with Rubin for his American Recordings label. Versions of Down the Line, I'm Movin' On and Carl Perkins' Everybody Wants to Be My Baby should have seen the light of day long before this set. I don't know, maybe for lack of space, legal stuff (the duet with Joe Strummer on Marley's "Redemption Song" is out of this world), whatever, but even the weakest track is a good one; I like them a lot, all have that touch that only Cash is capable to imprint in them. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart.

The fourth disc, My Mother's Hymn Book, features gospel songs Cash first learned from his mother as a child and was later reissued as a standalone album in 2004. There is just one thing that I don't like but it's not related to the music itself: the design of the folder that holds the discs.Particularly on the first CD, starting with a powerful performance of ''Long Black Veil'' this feels like a one man journey through the history of American song.

Although the images used on the standalone CD depict Cash near the end of his life, most of the recordings on My Mother's Hymn Book actually date to Cash's early sessions for American in 1993–1994 (hence the fact they only feature Cash performing by himself). This set was expensive enough and considering anyone willing to shell out the money for this very likely already have American I-IV in their collection (not to mention the later V and VI), I found it was superfluous and unnecessary. Many of the songs Cash recorded during the American sessions were updated versions of songs he had previously recorded. John enjoyed a much deserved critical renaissance in latter years being courted by the likes of Bono and Nick Cave, and this fusion of modern songwriting influences and the true Country story-teller roots of JC's work make this a five star box set. Banks of the Ohio", Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Chunk of Coal", Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" and the entire disc of previously unreleased gospel tunes are powerful statements, tunes where you feel privileged to hear Cash--despite declining health and failing voice--sing one more time, the way he wanted. The deluxe packaging includes a 104-page, cloth-bound book; never-before-seen photographs; and Cash's personal commentary on every song in the box. Flesh and Blood" was previously recorded by Cash for the soundtrack to the 1970 film I Walk the Line. This mammoth five CD box of seventy nine tracks from his American Recording sessions will only enhance his legend.

Who's Gonna Cry focuses on acoustic solo recordings, and finds Cash revisiting several classic songs from his legendary catalog. Irrespective of the source, all of our collectables meet our strict grading and are 100% guaranteed. An expansive box set of material, most of it previously unreleased, recorded during the artist's graceful twilight years. C. so soon after that of his beloved June, means there is one hell of a choir of Sam Phillips' boys assembling behind the Ol'Pearly Gates. Für mich ist es jedenfalls schwieriger (vor allem wenn es um vertonte Geschichten aus der alten Bibel geht, das pack ich fast nicht), die Songs alle zu mögen. If you're a fan you SHOULD get this, and if like I you praise Cash's American Recordings era is mandatory to own it. Condition - This item is in Excellent condition or better (unless it says otherwise in the above description).
