Fungi have been around for millions of years: they aren’t plants, they aren’t animals, but in this charming, magical card game from Ridley’s Games, Funky Fungi, they’re full of life and personality!In Undergrove, published by Alderac Entertainment Group (Cascadia, Tiny Towns), you play a Douglas Fir Tree. These age classifications reflect the content of these games and DVDs (violence, language, sex, drug use etc). You can pick cards towards the end of the line, spend sticks to delve deeper into the forest or even risk it: wait for cards to be discarded into the decay pile and get all of them later. Cooking sets of three or more like mushrooms – sizzling in butter or cider if the set is large enough – earns points toward winning the game. The play time is between 20 and 40 minutes and while the rules may initially seem a little boggy, this game will soon become a great pick-up-and-go addition to any collection. After each round, all players must remember to take a card from the “main fungi stack” to keep the total of six cards in their hand.

Collect three or more of any one type and cook them in a pan to score flavour points, or exchange two more more of a kind for sticks. The rest of cards are used to increase value when cooking (cider, butter), increase your hand size, or the frying pans, which are where you cook the mushrooms (you need one each time you want to cook). And rightly so because Fungi has some weird thematic elements that make it an altogether surreal experience if you care to actually think about it.My son and I enjoy the challenge of choosing what to collect and what to let rot (how does a frying pan rot? You don’t decide whether the game is going to be fun or balanced, the shuffled deck gets the final say. This is a deck with 77 library cards and 12 crypt cards, ready for play out of the box or customisable with other Vampire: The Eternal Struggle cards. Or perhaps that you’ve spent so much time lost in the forest that you’re fermenting your own apples and churning your own butter. You’ll be frying them up, perhaps in butter or cider, with the intention of earning the deliciousness points that will earn you victory in the final reckoning.
