About this deal

The book follows the story of Ada, who discovers her true identity and must travel into the heart of the rainforest to heal the divisions that are occurring within the kingdom. Through the sequence of learning, children will explore the story from various perspectives, comparing characters and writing letters and diary entries in role. The Sky-king, who does not like Ada’s mother, wants to kill Ada because he does not want any of Ada’s mother’s children to live.

I would recommend this book to my friend because he really likes adventure and this book is full of adventure. He deserved to be overthrown but instead of letting it happen, he tried to have kids murdered to stop it. But when Papa Eze himself becomes unwell he knows it's time to reveal to Ada her true heritage - a closely kept secret that has so far protected his daughter from her enemies. Ada has lived close to the great rainforest for her whole life, helping her beloved Papa Eze to heal fellow villagers when they fall sick. The plot was exciting because there were lots of cliffhangers and it was light-hearted and serious at different times. This is a fast-paced adventure story of a resourceful and feisty young girl determined to find out where she came from and where she fits into society. Bringing this historical context to life, the novel provides the context to explore and discuss the influence of this ancient kingdom. Featuring a strong female protagonist, the book opens up the chance to discuss identity, heritage and belonging.

Children of the Benin Kingdom is fast paced adventure story, set in one of Africa’s most fascinating civilisations, the Edo Kingdom of Benin. A riveting historical adventure… as much about friendship and loyalty and the bonds of family as a quest for identity. My least favourite character was Ujo pronounced oo-jor because he betrayed papa Eze and Ada to the Edo king (the sky king) Ogiso.PLEASE NOTE: From 1st of July 2021, shipments from the UK to EU countries will be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) charges.

It fits well with the increasing interest in African fiction and stories that are inclusive, diverse and explore a greater range of cultures, stories and settings. Eze teaches Ada his knowledge and skill in the ways of the forest but she feels something is missing and wants to find out more about her ancestors. The story is rich in historical detail and the cultural traditions of West Africa and as accurate historical fiction it is also perfect for celebrating Black history.Children of the Benin Kingdom is the debut novel by Dinah Orji, a British author of Nigerian heritage. Pursued by those who want her dead, Ada sets off on an incredible journey which tests her strengths to their limit – with just her friends, the guidance of her ancestors and her own self-belief to help her. My favourite character is Papaeze because he can heal the sick like Jesus but the worst character is chief Ewe because he treats people very terribly.
