About this deal

His accounting of my favorite battle “Agincourt” with King Henry V was wonderful read for me personally.

I had heard of the Wars of the Roses, so named because the two Houses of the Plantagenet Dynasties fought among themselves for 30 years, determining what historian is quoted.

Even worse, some of the mistakes alter the names of historical characters, and trickle into the index. Disraeli and Gladstone as PM’s had their moments in the sun; Disraeli of course attempted to get to the spot of the sun much longer in my opinion. I use the term 'English-speaking peoples' because there is no other that applies both to the inhabitants of the British Isles and to those independent nations who derive their beginnings, their speech, and many of their institutions from England, and who now preserve, nourish, and develop them in their own ways. Handsomely bound in full red morocco, spines with gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt lettering, decorated with lions rampant gilt, all edges gilt. S. and Canadian first editions of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples were published simultaneously.

There were publisher presentation sets of the first edition, so noted on the copyright pages, but such sets were not specially bound. A surprise was how hostile, land grabbing for the purpose of stealing jewels and anything of value, and simply cruel, were the Vikings. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Very Good condition (slight foxing on outer page block) in Very Good unclipped dust jacket (slight chipping at top and bottom of spine) No inscriptions.

Finely bound by Asprey in three-quarter red morocco over cloth boards, with gilt to spines, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In the case of the Canadian editions, these are delineated by an extra leaf before the title page printed, "with the best wishes and compliments of the season from myself and my associates" and hand-signed by John McClelland. The book is indeed very readable (although it is clear that it was written by a team, and the "Churchill touch" is less evident than in his war memoirs), and it doesn't overload the reader with dates and names. Parallel reading Churchill's A History of the English-speaking Peoples and Simon Schama's A History of Britain is an interesting process. Spanning four volumes and many centuries of history, from Caesar's invasion of Britain to the start of WWI, A History of the English Speaking Peoples stands as one of Winston Churchill's most magnificent literary works. The set was presented by Churchill to his close friend and associate Frank Clarke, who famously hosted Winston and Clementine Churchill at his Miami Beach home in January and February 1946, prior to Churchill's March appearance at Fulton College, Missouri to deliver what would come to be known as his "Iron Curtain" speech. Within this layer would be the future seeds (in my opinion) of the confusion that modern day people have with genealogical studies of their ancestors. In this Volume III we read in addition to William and Mary; that of Queen Anne, the Duke of Marlborough, and the ill-fated investment/opportunists of the 1720 South Sea Company that had promised (and outbid the Bank of England) to wipe away the National Debt of the time. Vol 1 First Published 1956,Vol 2 First Published 1956, Vol 3 First Published 1957, Vol 4 First Published 1958. Handsomely bound in half red morocco, spines with gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt lettering, decorated with lions rampant gilt, top edges gilt.

Founded by bankers who had financed the Clinchfield Railway and the Kingsport town site, Kingsport Press became "an integral component in fulfilling the interlocking concept of industry upon which Kingsport s founders created the planned industrial community" and "served as a catalyst for the development and expansion of related industries such as Mead Paper Company. What makes this set especially collectible is that in Volume I it is boldly signed in ink by Winston S. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958, after the author finished his second and final premiership and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. A sequel to Churchill's work, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900, by Andrew Roberts, was published in 2006. The BBC produced a series of twenty-six fifty-minute plays loosely based around Churchill's work and entitled Churchill's People which were broadcast in 1974 and 1975.First Printings of all four books in this four volume set with "First Published" to the reverse of each title page with no further impression noted, maps and genealogical tables.
