About this deal

They all knew that their lives were destined to end and yet, those who read and used the books as a teaching tool brought life and a small bit of happiness to those whose fate was to be exterminated. La lectura te mantiene en vilo en todo momento y, a pesar de que Dita es prácticamente una niña, su relato no es infantil.

Books are hard to come by, as many of them have been burned and deemed ‘blasphemous’ and ‘against the Fuhrer’, so Dita knows the job is a dangerous one. Cooper who is not known as a literate genius wrote an amazing account of children in the holocaust when he wrote the second Edelweiss Pirates novel "Edelweiss Express". I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about one of the darkest chapters of our history, anyone who likes books about books and wants to know more about WW 2 .Reading the notes at the end, and realizing that they had condensed a four hundred page novel into a graphic novel a third of the length, I feel like they did a good job of getting the meat of the story onto the page. This story is based on real history, from the holocaust survivor who became the main character in this book.

In 1949, after the Communist take-over, they emigrated to Israel, where they became teachers, parents and grandparents. Kraus’ foreword for The Librarian of Auschwitz she states, "It is a story born both from my own experiences and the rich imagination of the author. Though no punches are pulled about the unimaginable atrocity of the death camps, a life-affirming history. First of all I just want to take a moment to admire the cover, it's absolutely stunning and I think it represents the book perfectly. The housing was always referred to as “huts,” even though the housing was actually just barracks and converted stables.

My thoughts are definitely inadequate as to how to convey the horrific atrocities that occurred during this time in history that many would like to forget or ignore. This novel is closely based on a true story, told to Iturbe by the librarian herself when she was 80 years old.

This novel is one that could easily be recommended or taught alongside Elie Wiesel's Night and The Diary of Anne Frank and a text that, once read, will never be forgotten.

a história verdadeira de Dita Polachava, hoje Dita Kraus, e de tantos outros seres, prisioneiros, torturados e assassinados pelo "crime" de serem judeus. stars although a compelling read, something was lost in translation attempting to condense the novel into graphic form.
