Save planning and prep time using these engaging resources In the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, Robbie McLeod is on the run from the English Redcoats. On his furtive travels he finds a tiny wolf cub – and a sign proclaiming the killing of the last wolf in Scotland. Immediately identifying with the abandoned orphan, Robbie adopts the cub, and a powerful loyalty grows between them. But when Robbie flees his homeland and seeks his fortune in the New World, has the time come for the wolf to find a newer, freer home too? Written by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman, this gem of a story sweeps readers from eighteenth century Europe right across the Atlantic.

Robbie's story is a sad one. Orphaned as a baby, Robbie lived with his uncle, a violent, abusive man. As soon as he was old enough, he ran away from his uncle's farm and spent years on the run, stealing to feed himself. Inside, Robbie knew that the life of an itinerant petty thief was not for him, but he saw no way of extricating himself from that downward spiral. Until one day, he met a loving couple, Sean and Mary, who are unable to have children of their own. Sean and Mary took Robbie into their home and treated him as their own son. Under their kind care, Robbie flourished. But sadly, his happiness did not last. Robbie's Scotland was the Scotland of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Sean died at the battle of Culloden and Mary died at the hands of the brutal English soldiers. A fugitive once more, Robbie discovered an orphaned wolf cub and together they evaded the vicious redcoats, for at this time wolves were hunted down by the English in the same way as were the Jacobite rebels. Boy and wolf discovered a remarkable bond and together they needed to find a way to flee the country... Michael Morpurgo is a master storyteller, weaving captivating stories full of drama and intensity that are coming to be regarded as true classics. Exploring the most profound subjects with a light yet powerful touch, his books tell unforgettable stories in simple, direct words. A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books at festivals, concerts and theatres. Michael Morpurgo discovered his talent for writing while working as a teacher. “We had to read the children a story every day and my lot were bored by the book I was reading. I decided I had to do something and told them the kind of story I used to tell my kids – it was like a soap opera, and they focused on it. I could see there was magic in it for them, and realised there was magic in it for me.” In November 2016 Michael Morpurgo won the J M Barrie Award for his contribution to children’s literature. This award is given every year by Action for Children’s Arts to a “children’s arts practitioner” whose lifetime’s work has delighted children and will stand the test of time. The Last Wolf is a 2002 children's book written by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman. It won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Bronze Award. The resource contains a range of challenging vocabulary, quality discussion questions and a choice of follow-up tasks for each section of the book. I have used it in my classroom following the Highland Literacy Project’s way of organising reading in the upper primary classroom. Children engage in reading 3 times per week:In the story, their great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Robbie McLeod, talks about his childhood. After being orphaned, his cruel uncle had looked after him; to escape the abuse, Robbie ran away into the woods. He found a male wolf pup who, similarly, had also been orphaned, and looked after him, naming it Charlie. A few days later, Robbie and Charlie made their way to America in hopes of a better life, but they were disillusioned; in America, there had been a war between the redcoats and the rebels. They encountered life-threatening situations. The charismatic Prince sweeps through Scotland calling men to arms as he goes, and Robbie joins them. At Culloden the Scots are overwhelmed by the English, and Robbie runs for his life from the field of battle.

He joined the army and enjoyed meeting new friends, but hated being shouted at. So, he left the army and started university at King’s College in London. David Wood, chair of Action for Children’s Arts, said Morpurgo is “one of our greatest storytellers”. Michael Morpurgo has thrilled and delighted huge numbers of young readers since becoming a children’s author in the early 1970s," Wood said. "Action for Children’s Arts is delighted to recognise Michael’s outstanding contribution by presenting him with the J M Barrie Award 2016. His work will undoubtedly, like Peter Pan, stand the test of time, making him a truly worthy recipient of this award."
