About this deal

Samsung caught faking zoom photos of the Moon / A viral Reddit post has revealed just how much processing the company’s cameras apply to photos of the Moon, further blurring the line between real and fake imagery in the age of AI.

Samsung doesn’t exactly claim its Moon shots are representative of all its zoom photography, but a consumer would be forgiven for thinking this, so it’s worth emphasizing what’s really going on. Fun, stretching, just the right length, full of adventurous vocabulary and punctuation, [with] tips to support the parent or carer at home or the teacher who needs inspiration at the end of a busy day. Samsung did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment, but we’ll update this piece if they get back to us.It’s at this point that I think most people would agree the resulting image is, for better or worse, fake. It features engaging illustrations from Andy Rowland and quirky characters young readers will find hard to resist. Use the same focal length that you shoot the landscape with, when you photograph the moon, for the most realistic look in the final composite. The Moon looks more or less the same in every picture taken from Earth (ignoring librations and rotational differences), and while it has detail, it doesn’t have depth.

Photographing the moon along with the foreground landscape can be tricky because of the wide dynamic range. The test of Samsung’s phones conducted by Reddit user u/ibreakphotos was ingenious in its simplicity.Full moons—whether they’re Supermoons or not—make great subjects to photograph, and its easier than ever to shoot the moon with the Nikon COOLPIX P900 and its built-in Moon Scene Mode. Our Zoom Zoom Zoom nursery rhyme resource features bold illustrations and will look spectacular when used as a display item in your classroom. Select it and the camera will optimize the settings, focusing at infinity, in the center of the frame.

Bounce them in time to the rhyme, and then act like they’re the rocket and lift them up at ‘blast off! But for the time being, it seems fair to conclude that Samsung’s Moon photographs are more fake than real. On 20 July 1969, Angénieux was part of one of humankind's most extraordinary adventures, helping hundreds of millions of people on Earth to watch live footage of the first human to walk on the surface of the Moon. The only problem that it has is that the default max zoom is 200% of original and the imager may not want to artificially magnify (beyond the native size). In 2021, Input Mag published a lengthy feature on the “fake detailed moon photos” taken by the Galaxy S21 Ultra. At the Moon’s 12:20 position along the edge, and say 1000 kilometers toward the Moon’s center, located just above the white crater, there appears to be some sort of raised plateau.
