About this deal

In London, many box junctions have cameras in place, and you could be fined if you’re caught using the box incorrectly. Some parking bays will also have limitations on how long you can stay and what type of vehicle can park there. A 'no waiting' sign with a single yellow line means you can't wait there during the times shown on the sign.

Breakdown cover arranged and administered by RAC Financial Services Limited (Registered No 05171817) and provided by RAC Motoring Services (Registered No 01424399) and/or RAC Insurance Ltd (Registered No 2355834). At signal‑controlled junctions, the queues of traffic left at the end of a green phase have been significantly reduced and there have been marked reductions in injury accidents, especially those involving pedestrians. The second main condition is that drivers should have adequate visibility beyond the box to be able to make a clear judgement before entering it. If you’re a Blue Badge carrier, you can usually park on both double and single yellow lines for up to 3 hours, providing you have your badge clearly on display. There is an exception - if you want to turn right, you are allowed to enter the box and wait if you’re prevented from turning by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. If you're visiting from a non-EU country, you should contact the local council of the area you're staying in. They're purpose built to provide parking spaces that are more secure, usually monitored by CCTV and in a good location for local amenities.

Where the road has a solid, unbroken white line running along the side, parking is considered legal. Using information gleaned from Transport for London and Cardiff City Council – where there are already enforcement powers – Sam Wright and the RAC believe a box junction is a traffic control measure designed to prevent gridlock at junctions. Wright explains:"The key design principle is that yellow boxes should be no bigger than is necessary to prevent vehicles obstructing through movements. No waiting' with double yellow lines means no waiting or parking at any time, unless there are exceptions listed on nearby signs. along a length of a two-way road (other than at a junction), the carriageway of which is not greater than 4.Read the full report, Enforcing yellow box junction rules fairly: the dangers facing councils and drivers, here. Design flaws include junctions that have been installed in completely the wrong places, boxes that are larger than they should be and ones where buildings or street furniture obstruct drivers from seeing where boxes end, making it impossible to assess whether there is enough space beyond the junction for their vehicle to fit into.

RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said:“In the absence of definitive guidance on the design, maintenance and enforcement of box junctions there will be a high degree of confusion among drivers and local authorities which could lead to an avalanche of penalty charge notices being wrongly issued and then having to be appealed. The situation can be compounded by crossings and stop lines set back which make it even more difficult for drivers to see whether there is space to make it through the junction in one go as they are further away to start with.In the weeks leading up to an event that’s expected to cause disruption, the local councils should usually have signs up explaining what’s going to change.

Single red lines mean you can’t park, stop or load during specified time periods that should be displayed clearly on surrounding signs. There's no fixed amount, and the cost depends on where you get your ticket - charges are usually higher in London. The Blue Badge Scheme specifies how many disabled parking spaces a council needs to provide in council car parks or on-street. A 'no waiting' or 'no parking' sign lets a driver stop temporarily, maybe to let out a passenger or unload some goods, but you can't linger there.

RAC Insurance Ltd is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. which looks at ‘Suitability’, is more helpful: ‘Experience has shown that the marking improves traffic flow where previously there were delays due to vehicles blocking the junction and impeding the cross flow. You must not park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it.
