About this deal

If we focus on the screen first, the RX3 has the larger screen – with the XZ making use of the older generation 7-inch touchscreen.

On paper at least, the XDJ-RX is the first controller from Pioneer that has convincing answers to some of the big shortcomings people roll out when it comes to software DJing – and I’m not referring to the detractors who won’t give it a go, but those of us who’ve done it for years and still see things about it that aren’t perfect. It has the full range of inputs and outputs you’d expect from a device aimed at semi-pro and pro users: Round the front are 1/8″ and 1/4″ headphones inputs, then round the back the two dual XLR/TS mic inputs, RCA inputs for 2 x phono, 2 x line, 1 x aux, an 1/8″“portable [device]” input, earth pole, and booth (TRS) and master (XLR and RCA) outputs, plus the computer USB. LITTLE configurations, the boffins at Pioneer DJ have turned out a unit capable of so much without development that would have undoubtedly resulted in a significantly more expensive unit.

If you are going to go with the touch screen have the ability to plug in an ipad / ipad mini / Android tablet and have that control the unit and display the details. Most music today is recorded digitally or even created digitally, and even for vinyl is only converted into an analogue signal in the final stage of manufacture after the final mixing and finishing, so the whole notion of ‘analogue sounding better’ is a thoruoughly fallacious argument, unless the music has been played, recorded, mixed, remixed, and pressed in an unbroken analogue chain. I think that a version like that would be good, but I think you would also see a lot of other features disappear too, mainly on the FX side of things.

One little addition that we grew to like was the performance pad status strip on the touchscreen, which shows what a pad will do before you hit it – a useful check to have. So that a fully analog, immersive experience is created without a 7 inch screen glaring in DJs eyes in a darker bedroom setting? When I will start playing in a club with DJM/CDJs the learning curve from this setup that I will have used at home will be steep. It’s also capable of hybrid playback – using both the standalone engine alongside two channels of Rekordbox or Serato DJ playback – which is great for DJs who us both platforms. The XDJ-RX integrates two USB-driven players and a two-channel mixer, with build quality and performance features inherited from the club-standard Pioneer DJ Nexus set-up.It features a high resolution and frame rate so you’ll see everything clearly, including the smooth waveform. The unit's performance pads add a physical element, with immediate access to Auto Beat Loops and Hot Cues, or DJs can select and slice loops live in the mix with RX's brand-new Loop Slice function. And no matter what I do, I’ll always need my laptop with me for that, so I’ll just stick with Serato / Numark until Serato decides to merge with controllers if they decide to do so.

This will also give me the ability to use it in ‘digital DJing’ with Serato DJ so it would be very similar to using DDJ-SZ right?Saying that it is still a lovely sound for practice , bar, or even a very small bar/club and of course the sound coming out of the mixer doesn’t matter a jot unless you are playing it out of an equally high end to awesome sound system or HiFi. The jogs are the same smaller size found on the XDJ-RX2 – and with even the “budget” DDJ-FLX6 getting “big” jogs, they now look a little out of place on a two grand unit – but it does help to keep the size down I suppose. Browse: lets DJs quickly browse and select tracks, with easy access to artwork views and Hot Cue info for each track.

Your last 2 sentences – that’s exactly what I am thinking of doing –> getting xdj-rx and hooking up 1200s so that if I want I can use standalone mixer function on the xdj-rx. It has got better effects than any other standalone DJ unit, but feels a bit limited in other areas – it offers no cloud music functions, for instance, and we would like to have seen Pioneer DJ’s excellent key sync incorporated from its CDJ-3000 players.I read on Pioneer forums that even when DVS is ready and introduced for Rerkorbox ecosystem – xdjrx will never support it due to some hardware limitations of the xdi-rx which cannot be overcome (guy from Pioneer has stated that). Simply plug in your rekordbox USB or connect your iPhone, iPod touch or Android smartphone to load tracks directly to the XDJ. What this is, though, is all the best bits of the hugely popular XDJ-RX2, with a bigger screen, a faster processor, additional Serato compatibility, and more great FX. Overall, though, it’s a worthy improvement on its predecessor – just don’t expect it to act like a phone or tablet screen. On the XDJ-RX3 you can additionally preview the tracks by activating the cue button on the bottom left side of the mixer and then pressing and holding on the track’s waveform in the library view.
