Woodford Reserve Wheat is based on historical recipes but influenced by the iconic core Woodford Reserve Bourbon brand. The mashbill for Woodford Reserve features a high percentage of rye: 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malt. I enjoyed it a lot and will consider it over time and explore its complexity in more detail over time. I have quite a collection of Malt Whiskies and love them but this was a fascinating introduction to decent Bourbon. Woodford Reserve is such a fixture among bourbon lovers that it’s hard to imagine that the brand only dates back to 1996 when it was launched by Brown-Forman.There are notes of espresso beans, winter spice, cereal sweetness, plenty of rye, ground ginger, almond oil, toasty oak and a little rum. This right here is an extraordinarily snazzy expression from Woodford Reserve bourbon, which has been allowed a three-year-long finishing period in XO Cognac casks! Firstly, this whisky uses a high proportion of malted barley (around 30%, significantly more than in most Bourbons) and secondly the barley has been cherry wood smoked.

The flagship expression doesn’t carry an age statement though it contains whiskey between six and seven years old, and it is bottled at 43. Part of the Woodford Reserve Master's Collection, Batch Proof is made from the same mash bill as its core Kentucky straight bourbon, but bottled at a higher proof of 123. Uniquely matured in separate, charred oak barrels – the second barrel deeply toasted before a light charring – extracts addit.The recipe and processing methods have stayed true to their roots, with a heritage that is respected and acknowledged with every bottle. For those who are connoisseurs in the world of bourbon, then Woodford Reserve is considered a classic, that matches its history as one of the oldest distilleries. Woodford Reserve may be better known for its brilliant bourbon, but the team in Kentucky isn't resting on its laurels one bit.

Often cited as the birthplace of bourbon, it was here in 1838 that Dr James Crow perfected the “Sour Mash” process that is still used in bourbon production today, adding to the distillery’s historical value.
