About this deal

A horde of biomass-hungry Tyranids from Hive Fleet Leviathan descend upon a defensive line of Ultramarines led by the impressive new Captain in Terminator Armour. They are holding the line against the worst that Hive Fleet Leviathan can throw against them, including a savageWinged Tyranid Prime, a brain-meltingNeurotyrantand its two Neuroloid lackeys, threeVon Ryan’s Leapers, a Psychophage, aswarm of 20 Termagantsand two Ripper Swarms, 11 Neurogaunts, five Barbgaunts, and a brutal reimagining of the iconicScreamer-Killer.

One of the most awaited model of 10 th Edition, the reimagined Screamer-Killer looks incredibly scary, and it’s bite seems to be worse than it’s bark. The Apothecary Biologis is one of the slightly (and we really do mean slightly) more complicated builds, and this is simply because he has a few more fragile parts that you’ll need to be aware of when slotting him together – namely the instruments on his pack. The book is divided into several major sections: the Warhammer Hobby, Dark Imperium background, the Forces of the 41st Millennium, the Core Rules, Combat Patrol rules, and Crusade Rules for the Tyrannic War. There are some striking similarities (and some even more striking gaps and seams on this model, the worst of which is obvious in the photo above) between the Psychophage and the Venomcrawler, but that isn’t to say the Psychophge is an ugly model (well, no more so than it’s meant to be). There are 66 cards in the deck, breaking down as follows: five Deployment cards, nine Primary Mission cards, 12 Mission Rules cards, 16 Attacker Secondary Mission cards, 16 Defender Secondary Mission cards, four Attacker Gambit cards, and four Defender Gambit cards. When you lift the lid, you’ll find stacks of sprues containing two armies full of gorgeous new miniatures.

If we were taking an average score for the Tyranids side of the box, it would likely come out as similar to the Space Marines: whilst the Tyranids minis are a bit more of a rollercoaster, they have significantly more extreme ups and downs (again, Neurogaunts versus Screamer-Killer). One thing to keep in mind, this will all be ETB (not a bad thing, just something to think about), and it might be a while before we see all the releases separately. We don’t usually look at construction guides, but with a release of this size we felt it might be worth a mention. Later today, we’ll treat you to a closer look at the new Terminator models, complete with a scale comparison spanning from 2nd Edition to the present day. And besides, those same cynics can’t argue that the Tyranid half of the box isn’t new and exciting – because there are some models in there that prove the future is very bright for Warhammer 40,000 – Tyranids in particular.Even if you’re not a fan of the Imperium’s factions, there’s still plenty in here you can get stuck into.

You’ll also find a full complement of Crusade rules to get your narrative campaigns up and running ahead of Codex releases, and a full Crusade expansion that delves into the story of the Fourth Tyrannic War through a series of linked campaign games. Now, that sentence will mean absolutely nothing to non-gamers, but to put it simply: this is the deck of cards used to determine missions during competitive play. This thing is the counterpart to the masterful Captain in Terminator Armour, and whilst this is a good figure, it doesn’t hit the spot the same way the Captain does – for me, at least. This horrifying floating brain has some incredible capabilities as the Leader of either some Tyrant Guard or Neurogaunts, buffing their Hit and Wound rolls, the Shadow in the Warp Army Rule and the Synapse of the Tyranid army. This deck of cards allows more serious gamers and tournament-minded collectors to begin honing their skills within the new edition from the word go.

This, believe it or not, is actually a good thing – the explanation screenshotted above is just poorly written and makes it sound a lot more complicated than it actually is.We are not a hyper-successful brand with millions of followers who companies would sell their souls to work with; we have to choose our battles with exceptional care. Dark Imperium and The Forces of the 41st Millennium each offer a deep dive on the state of play in the galaxy, examining its history, its major players, and key locations.
