About this deal

While the title of "heavyweight boxing champion of the world" doesn't have quite the same luster today as it did in previous decades, it is still considered an honor to be part of that linear history.

He shortly after this proceeded to face arguably the heaviest hitting man in boxing ever, taking his biggest shots and getting up off the canvas in the process. The definite article sounds more definitive, but in reality it’s more of the same – more braggadocio, more humility, more professions of love for his wife and family, more descriptions of his mental health, more threats to retire, more talking up potential fights of the future. Photograph: Étienne Laurent/EPA Tyson Fury in his rematch with US boxer Deontay Wilder for the WBC world heavyweight championship in Las Vegas, February 2020. Behind the Mask is an unflinching autobiography from the greatest boxer of our time and a man who has demonstrated strength of a very different kind by conquering his demons.

The all-British collision has been confirmed for the national stadium, where Anthony Joshua previously staged his classic win over Wladimir Klitschko. A traveller, he notes that he experienced discrimination before he was famous but his talent made it impossible for prejudices to sideline him within boxing: “I’ve earned the right to fight on merit. No one beat Klitschko, not for a decade – his safety-first style was honed to a fine point by the great trainer Manny Steward, saviour of vulnerable heavyweights. Tyson’s book was crammed with knowledge, care and honesty from his wins with Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder to his personal life and of course Mental Health.

And listening to him speak you would think he is a world class entertainer, whether it is rushing into a press conference dressed as batman, getting carried to the ring on a throne or serenading an audience after a win. This ‘dream come true’ soon turned to nightmare, however, as alcohol and cocaine abuse took hold and Tyson was stripped of his titles. Nonetheless it took a while for him to be respected; his demands for a tilt against Klitschko were largely met with derision and anticipatory schadenfreude by pundits and fans.
