Nine automatic cooking functions take most of the guesswork out of air frying but there’s still an option to manually set the time and temperature if need be.
When the Tower Vortex 5-in-1 Digital Air Fryer showed up on my doorstep I was initially impressed by how different it looks from other air fryers on the market. As with a regular oven, the shelf closest to the top of the fryer cooked faster than the lower two, so it took two rotations to make sure every shelf got some time at the top of the oven.Previously Small Appliance and Cookware Editor, she remains our go-to expert for all things air fryer related. The charring in my image is a result of the harissa paste, but I've also used the Tower Vortex for a regular Sunday roast chicken and it did a spectacular job of a simple, un-flavoured chicken for this too.
Instead you place your food on the wire mesh trays and insert them into the air fryer as you would a regular oven. What I loved the most was the rotisserie setting, which made it easier than ever to make delicious, juicy and evenly cooked cuts of meat. Cheaper models may also require you to parboil chips, which might not be ideal if you’re looking for fast cooking times. Air fryers work by convection, meaning they circulate hot air around your food, ensuring every bit of surface area is exposed to the oil and heat.
