About this deal

So long as you respect its limitations, though, it sounds good enough to let you put plans to pick up one of the best soundbars on the back burner for a while. Using this menu you can discover and pair devices that use Bluetooth wireless technology, and start to use them with the TV. One final strength of the 50UK3163DB’s pictures is that dark scenes aren’t impacted by any really distracting backlight blooming or general clouding inconsistencies. There is synchronisation with Google’s digital assistant through the ‘Ok Google’ ecosystem that connects a compatible product to the TV.

Dialogue is clear and easy to follow and both the voices and the sound effects are balanced well with any background music. The TV measures at 732 x 78 x 439mm without the stand, or 732 x 189 x 472mm with it, weighing 7kg to make it slim and lightweight. The Dolby Vision playback is backed up, too, by support for both the HLG and industry standard HDR10 HDR formats.Awarded the 4K HDR Ultra HD logo, all of Toshiba's HDR TV's have been proven to deliver and faithfully display 4K HDR content in all it's glory.

Its proprietary ‘TRU’ system includes elements aimed at improving the playback of motion, reducing the jagged look curved edges can exhibit (especially when they’re not native 4K), and enhancing contrast. It is a simple and clean-looking display that would look great in spaces like bedrooms or smaller apartments. A shot of the sky showed some definition, while other shots had a grey tinge in the corners of the screen. This IPS screen plays better in brighter rooms (blacks are certainly helped), and performance is not much different from the UL20 or U29.

As Trinity escapes the agents in the opening scene, the Tru Flow conducts its work in a stable manner – aside from some blurriness, judder and the slight unreality motion often presents, it’s a smooth performer. With more pixels, you get a sharper, clearer picture than is possible from an equivalent sized 1080p display. I tried messing with the settings but the Blacklight, Contrast and other things were all set to max, the only thing that wasn't set to max were Brightness and Tint I think. Alexa is built-in – although annoyingly, a notification pops up asking if you want to activate it every time the TV is powered on and can’t be turned off unless you log in to Alexa.

If you really want to get an impression of HDR’s strengths without having to spend big on a much higher end TV, the 50UK3163DB won’t let you down. You’ll have to flick the switch at the mains just to shut down the AI assistant and stop it listening for a ‘power on’ command. Press it in a video app and it brings up the audio-visual settings instead of the rows of settings and apps. App support includes Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5 and BritBox for video, along with the rest of the UK catch-up apps available in Freeview Play. That said, I was disappointed to see Disney Plus, Apple TV and NOW were absent, and there’s no support for Spotify or Apple Music. or Ultra HD) refers to the resolution of a TV’s display, which equates to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that it can display.
