I will try to be as spoiler-free as possible, but the bottom line is that I enjoyed The Shadow Cabinet as much as, if not more than, Her Majesty’s Royal Coven (HMRC). Readers who enjoy feminist, queer fantasy like The Priory of the Orange Tree (2019), by Samantha Shannon, will enjoy this series.

This cleverly constructed contemporary fantasy, the adult debut from YA bestseller Dawson (This Book Is Gay), launches the HMRC series. I’m not certain that they’ll age as well as others as they are really at the pulse of where conversations in politics and society are right now – and hopefully we will be able to move on in a positive direction from here.These books are well-written and compelling, interacting with contemporary issues, conversations and language in a way that makes them incredibly relevant to the present day. Ciara, Leonie, Elle, and Theo are fierce, angry, sexy, warm–and absolutely unapologetic as they fight for what they believe in, all in the name of sisterhood.
