As in the book, the film revolves around a journalist by the name of Ellie, who investigates a historical love affair between a socialite named Jennifer and a journalist named Anthony in the 1960s, after chancing upon a stash of mysterious love letters. Since the story's told in dual timelines, readers learn more of Jennifer and B's love story through both Ellie and Jennifer's perspectives. But as it turns out, this is really two novels: a fairly pedestrian one about a love affair in 1960 and a more engaging sequel forty years later. In 2003 we meet Ellie Haworth; such a modern woman, she's single, in a job she loves and having an affair with a married man. Ellie is a commitment-phobic workaholic who is so bruised from a break-up that she does whatever she can to avoid catching feelings.

That is why is it so poignant to see them both make the active choice to reunite many years later and create an imaginary happy ending to bandage over all of the time they spent apart. Decades later, a reporter comes across the couple's letters and convinces her editor to run it as a story in the newspaper — but first, she'll have to put her journalistic skills to the test and track down these mystery lovers to get the full scoop. He really substantially changed the modern-day plot, and I was totally on board with that, because I understood that it would feel wrong. She's young, she's beautiful and she's accomplished only, it seems, at the social lifestyle of the extremely rich. Her brother, a special ops soldier, had just died during his assignment, she grew up without her parents - they'd died when she was a toddler, her grandmother has passed away only a short tJennifer decides at the last minute to go and meet him at the station, but gets into in a car accident on the way. Adding to the confusion is that every time it would switch between the years, the chapter would often start out featuring a different character you hadn't met before (like the secretary, or the lover the first time, or the lover's boss). Ellie recounts her findings to Anthony, letting him know Jennifer is still alive and that she hasn't stopped thinking of him. Overcome by guilt, and the thought that he is gone forever, she stays with Laurence for the next four years. Intriguingly, Moyes said that despite the relatively few changes made to the '60s storyline, that was the aspect of the film she was more involved in when it came to making tweaks to the script, "Just because I'm a perfectionist about things like language and the types of words that might have been used in the 1960s. Yes, it's romantic, in an old-fashioned, black-and-white-B-movie kind of way, where overly sentimental dialogue was the norm and silly young women wept copious tears at the plight of star-crossed lovers. The love that is shared through a couples love letters are very heartwarming and also at times extremely frustrating. I tried to like it -- I really tried -- but honestly, it's got to be the least satisfying book I've read this year.

Jennifer then discovers, through Laurence’s secretary, that Laurence had known that Anthony was alive and had intercepted letters from Anthony asking her to join him after he had left for New York.
