About this deal

Like her feelings for Rafe, Isabel’s ward, or that she studies from Wulfric’s forbidden books at night. In fact, women at all levels of society in the early modern period, whether rich or poor, were involved in creating herbal remedies of one kind or another for the health and wellbeing of their families and communities. We follow the villagers of Eyam as they deal with the complexities the plague brings to their lives.

There isn’t a cliché in sight, and the book’s real strengths are its tolerance of shortcomings and differences, and its understanding of just how difficult it can be to lead a fulfilling life… I was drawn in by the fantastic opening premise, but I stayed for the insightful reflection. The relationship between Mae and her father was more difficult to read about though - his thoughts on women generally, including his daughter, were harsh and controlling. To help reduce the potential harm of the hemlock plant please make sure you read the advice set out below so you can keep yourselves and others safe on the allotment. I can't say that any of the characters felt unique, and that was probably one of my biggest problems with it.Petals and Stones is a book that gets off the blocks at 100 miles per hour – it’s a brilliant opening set-up that well and truly draws us into the story from the outset…. I'm not exactly sure what aspect of the story threw me off my game but it was definitely not the writing. Também Eyam passará por um período de quarentena com o objetivo de minimizar as consequências da peste. I kept hoping and praying that Mae would finally be free of that dreadful home but I hadn’t quite imagined events to unfold as they did. So she tells nobody her fears about the pious, reclusive apothecary, on whom she is keeping a watchful eye.

A fantastic historical novel centred on the village of Eyam that found itself at the heart of a plague crisis. Her father is the village’s apothecary and highly regarded but not many know what sort of a man he really is. A glitteringly dark historical novel of love, persecution, and survival set against the backdrop of one of history's most terrifying episodes: the Bubonic Plague.Overall, I thought it was a little slow-paced, and I didn’t really connect with any of the characters but still found it an enjoyable, entertaining read. But it will only ever have been gentlewomen and apothecaries who possessed the expensive equipment and quantities of ingredients required to make the more complicated and luxurious remedies – distillation being the most prized and sophisticated of all. Joanne Burn was born in Northampton in 1973, and now lives in the Peak District where she works as a writing coach. When I look back, it is perhaps no surprise at all that Humphrey Merrill’s home inspired a suspense and secret-filled story, with an apothecary and his daughter at its dark heart. The juxtaposition of external and internal threats - the disease that prowls, the people who share your home - creates a growing tension that had me turning pages late into the night.

Burn refers to a number of books in her novel, works by Markham, Lavater, Ady, the scientific experiments of the Royal Scoiety, all of which would have been key texts in the C17. Baseado em factos reais, a história que nos é contada em “A Cura da Cicuta” é passada na vila de Eyam, entre 1665 e 1666 (período em que Inglaterra se debatia com a peste negra). Briefly, Mae's adolescent lover, Rafe, is referred to as a blackamoor but beyond that hint nothing much is made of his racial identity.Expect your writing to be rubbish in the beginning, and during the early stages of any new writing project, because that’s how it works. When Uma discovers her husband’s infidelity just hours before his untimely death, the carefully woven threads of her life begin to unravel.

Henbane, also known as black henbane or Stinking Nightshade, was used to treat rheumatism, toothache and persistent coughs, despite all parts of the plant being highly toxic and fatal even in small doses. James, Duke of York (later, briefly, James II of England before he was exiled to France in 1688) traveled aboard the Gloucester in 1682 to . Poisons played an interesting role, with diseases themselves often viewed as poisons within the body, involving putrefaction that needed to be drawn out or dried up using astringent or poisonous substances: the principle of curing ‘like with like’. Leah's character, despite not being able to directly interact with any of the other characters, is so well thought out.Remarkably, it still had some of Merrill’s old vials and tiny pan scales in a little cupboard in an alcove.
