His late-life partner Florence Ben Sadoun was represented as shunning him after his stroke, although in reality she visited him frequently at the hospital in Berck-sur-Mer where he lived during his final days. The film is based on a true story and it must have been an enormous challenge to bring this story to the screen.Several key aspects of Bauby's personal life were fictionalized in the film, most notably his relationships with the mother of his children and his girlfriend. Despite his condition, he authored a book by blinking his left eye-lid when a correct alphabet was uttered by a person.

The problem is that mixing his factually accurate journey through locked-in syndrome with a personal life that has been fictionalized for film has affected real people who were intensely involved in Bauby's life before and after his accident. On December 8th of 1995, the editor-in-chief of the French fashion magazine Elle, Jean-Dominique Bauby, suffered a massive stroke which severed his brain stem from his spinal cord and rendered the worldly, charismatic, fashionable man nearly completely paralyzed. In one of the depictions, he sees a reflection that he finds disfigured but then realizes that it is his. One of the best films in years, and in artistic cinematic terms, one of the best films I've ever seen. There is a seamless blend of cinematography with the music to enhance the inner life of the main character, the viewer is at one with his inner frustration, his soaring imagination, his follies, faults and lusts.
