About this deal

The police officers are portrayed as fairly useless unless Wren needs someone to converse with to move the story along. With the help of police detectives and others in her office, Wren tries to stay one step of Jeremy, but can she stop him before she becomes the next victim? Bodies which are face up but have lividity marks on their cheeks because otherwise Wren wouldn’t be able to be smug (she spends a lot of time smirking) and see them right away, characters suddenly walking when they were sitting in a car.

I got the impression the author was trying to make him out like a Buffalo Bill-type character (I could be very wrong here), but unlike Bill, Jeremy/Cal lacks the backstory and methodical and meticulous planning as well as execution when it comes to his murders. As the chapters fly by, we eventually learn this is in fact not her first run-in with him, the previous encounter occurring years earlier while she was still a student, providing insight into why Wren is so intent on catching the Butcher, who has hunted the Bayou for years. There is nothing predictable about this book, and it is clear Alaina has figured out the perfect recipe for a thriller. There are a bare minimum of scenes with her doing anything outside of work, and even those scenes have her talking about her work. You can tell it is a first novel, and while I think there is a LOT of potential here, it's just not quite there yet. This novel follows our main character Wren, a forensic pathologist, who ends up doing more detective work instead of staying at the morgue where her ass belongs. The Butcher and The Wren follows Wren, a forensic pathologist on the hunt for a serial killer ‘The Butcher’. Wren: I didn't necessarily like her but I did like that she was a strong woman and a forensic pathologist, not a police detective.

The next a fortune teller with friends who are present for 10 pages and then never heard from again. How did Jeremy have enough time to bury Emma, then dispose of another body under the stage, and then the police had enough time to find the stage-body and get to the coffin in time? Wren Muller, a talented forensic pathologist who finds herself taken aback by the sheer number of murder victims piling up of late in Louisiana bayou country. In deep Louisiana, a serial killer with a taste for medical experimentation is completing his most ambitious project yet.
