About this deal

When it came to cleaning off the first application my chain was remarkably free from grot and filth. If you want the familiarity of a wet drip lubricant to apply to your drivetrain then give Syngergetic a look. I’m going to start sharing some pictures and memories over the next week or so starting with these, taken on the first over night of the year. It's a dark-coloured wax lubricant that the Finnish company says is suited to road, gravel and mtb riding.

The first successful wax/water emulsion containing as much wax as needed to last for the duration of a marathon ride. WD40 (the brand) also makes a range of bike-specific chain lubricants now that are better suited to the job, so save the WD40 (the product) for un-seizing or protecting metal parts. Traditionally, you switch to dry lube at this point, only to have a wet spell or a lingering old puddle render your chain dry as a bone.

Give your front crank and rear mech a spray of degreaser, scrub them with the toothbrush, then wash them down with plenty of water. Moreover, Squirt’s impressive longevity also means you don’t have to use as much of it so the bottle lasts longer. However, I've recently been using the Muc Off ceramic dry as I had about a bazillion samples to use up and I have to say I'd really forgotten how good it is both on and off road at this time of year. The downside is that the sticky nature of wet oil can attract dirt that, if left to build up, can work as a grinding paste to rapidly wear out components. If you take the time to look after your bike well, or you’re a racer or rider of a super high-end bike in the sunshine then dry lube is the way to go, and we found these were the most popular among the road.

It's long-lasting per application and is relatively cheap, stays clean and feels really smooth to ride. I've pretty much just used Squirt for the last few years but will give Silca, White Lightning and home-grown mixture a crack too at some point. It prolongs the life of your drive-train by reducing friction while improving shifting and reducing irritating dry chain noise. Then you leave it overnight to dry (Smoove recommends this, though it says an hour is enough) and the next day, the chain appears completely dry.

As sticky liquids, wet chain lubes flow into the nooks and crannies of your chain to lubricate it, and flow back in when displaced by pressure while dry chain lubes use a volatile carrier to wash waxy lubricant into your chain; the carrier evaporates leaving a solid lubricant. Squirt Long Lasting Chain Lube keeps your chain running cleanly and smoothly regardless of the conditions, and it's quick and easy to apply. You should normally apply lube to a clean, dry chain, so if your chain is dirty, clean it first, then apply a thin stream as you rotate the bike's cranks backwards. I commute 35 km/day, regardless of the weather and despite the climate over here giving me a relentless push toward wet lubes, I finally chucked them. Cleaning the chain is no good if you're going to put it back onto a dirty cassette, rear mech and front crank.
