A recurring theme in the series is Rusty's greedy, egocentric, and bold behavior opposed to Chalky's kind, timid, and often naïve nature.

He teaches English and once harbored dreams of literary achievement, which we learn in the unfolding of events amounted to little more than the cover feature in Nebulous: Worlds of Imagination. Anything said on the matter of the actual contents of Rusty Brown should account for the fact that this is only the first half of the work. I have got the feeders to stop them getting to the food, but they are always able to knock them to the ground. Yesterday we watched a great spotted woodpecker for a while in the same tree, and this brown bird was a pretty similar size.

Which perhaps explains a bit of that aforementioned ire: when Noted Comics Scholar Dave Eggers says something like, “arguably the greatest achievement of the form, ever” (a real quote, apparently) my reaction is simply to ask the bonafides by which he arrives at such a tendentious judgment.
