Claire Shaffer from The New York Times critiqued the film, stating that the film "had the potential to be a poignant melodrama — or maybe a sharp satire" but "wallows in contrived plots and subplots". Despite enjoying Purple Hearts overall, it was kind of slow going for me at times, there was a lot of side stories going on to which sort of took my attention away at times, especially as I was more interested in how things would go down between Luke and Cassie. The writing in this book was really great and I immediately thought I'd found a gem when I started reading.

Even before all this shit went down, I wasn’t a shake-your-hand-and-ask-about-the-weather kind of guy. the characters cassie and luke have very real struggles and passions and following their thoughts and emotions through the first person narrative was very interesting, I couldn’t put the book away. When I first read the title, I asked Liz if Purple Hearts meant it was the blending of a red and a blue heart, and she giggled and she said, ‘I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s exactly what our story is. It’s obvious that the pair don’t get along as they are at constant loggerheads over their strikingly different opinions and views on the world, so we know that their marriage was purely based on their own wants and needs and that they weren’t in love with each other. When Frankie declines, his attractive but frustratingly intense friend Luke volunteers to marry Cassie instead.The views expressed here are that of the respective authors/ entities and do not represent the views of Economic Times (ET).
