Short review --> "There are a lot of issues with this book, but regardless every single menstruator should read it: it sets a baseline for knowledge that's gatekept, particularly around hormones and irregular period cycles. But really I just love that this is finally a time when our actual experience of our hormones and our cycles is what matters because it’s about time that we were listened to.

If you’ve read my book Period Power, then you’ll know that I have a lotto say about the menstrual cycle and how it impacts your life. I’m going to be explaining it in a way that will help you to make sense of your cycle, whatever your particular experience is like. Other positives, letting no be a complete sentence at last, no longer giving a shit about what other people think of you, not having a cycle anymore. I’m your host Maisie Hill menstrual health expert, acupuncturist, certified life coach and author of Period Power. I’m a vegetarian, so the only things I eat that aren’t on that list are fruit, eggs, and I guess spinach? Now, in the days before ovulation, testosterone also shows up and can increase energy, motivation, and sexual desire. Ninety per cent of women experience symptoms of PMS, a syndrome which features a wide range of signs and symptoms and yet there’s an enduring lack of understanding about what it actually is, and a disappointingly meager range of treatment options. This is an important one and especially after everything I’ve mentioned so far it can sound like this is all going to be pretty shit, there’s going to be no positives to this. In Maisie Hill's parlance (aka: each 'week'-ish of your monthly cycle is named after a season), my experience of my "Winter" seems to be what the average menstruator experiences in their "Summer. The menopause is actually only one day, “it marks 12 months since your last period, after which you’re postmenopausal,” Hill explains.

Because here's the thing: I've done enough internet-reading about hormones to know that my cycle isn't typical, but there's also no way it's entirely unique. And we also have a young child and all the things that come with parenting and making sure your relationship isn’t forgotten about in the midst of things.

We have internalized the belief that if someone isn’t having a good time, it’s our responsibility to fix it.I'm also lucky and gay enough to not have to be on hormonal birth control, and so I know my cycle quite well.

And as you move through the first half of your cycle, estrogen is increasing and peaks just before ovulation. Beyond the pseudoscientific “treatments” I also find it unhelpful to suggest restricting one’s life and work according to a *largely* arbitrary set of “seasons”.I used to experience extreme pre-menstrual rage, irritability, and debilitating period pain that would quite literally floorme, so I wanted to use my experiences to help others learn about their cycle and use it to great effect in their lives! Anger has the worst reputation, but it can be contained, directed, wielded, and focused in a non-malicious way. I should have stopped reading this book when I read the most vapid sentence ever uttered by human beings: "The Universe has got your back. And the data that they collected was then analysed incorrectly, and I would say reported irresponsibly.
