About this deal

It is an entirely ridiculous story about an old man who lives in a Scottish cave, and the completely fantastical adventures he has. But my favorite part was the description of the old man's loo, the place where he does most of his reading! With choreography by Drew McOnie and a commissioned score by Nigel Hess, the ballet received its première at Sadler's Wells Theatre, London on 14 October 2007 and was performed from 24 to 27 October at Leatherhead Theatre in Surrey. The old man loses his grip while attempting to scale the Lochnagar cliff and falls into the loch, where he meets "lagopus Scoticus," a "freshwater variant of Neptune". He chats to an animal he names Maudie, the original occupant of the cave, while setting up the apparatus for running his long awaited bath.

Rather an abrupt ending as if Charkes suddenly ran out of time or was summoned to do something serious! After eavesdropping on people having picnics, the old man decides he should visit London to see for himself the place he has heard so much about. He ends up on top of Lochnagar but is then swept up by a golden eagle that carries him as far as Balmoral, where he bounces on a trampoline before coming to rest. The story is about an old man of who lives in a cave near Loch Lochnagar (which is close to Balmoral, where the British Royal family have their favourite Summer home). Prince Charles' quirky and funny picture book passed my family by when my children were young, but they would have loved this fantastical tale full of clever word play and delightful images. There is the risk of a frost at any time of the year, even in July and August, when each month averages 1 air frost every 10 years. It has wonderful, watercolour sketches throughout the book by Sir Hugh Casson which help display the character of the old man and some of the fantastic creatures who are his neighbours and friends.
