About this deal

We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories. The reason for their swiftness is severely practical: food is so scarce up there that only those who can move swiftly over vast stretches of ground may hope to survive. The perfect hill companion is the one whose identity is for the time being merged in that of the mountains, as you feel your own to be. We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers.

Lopez’s dazzling book combines cultural history, anthropology, and lyrical prose-poetry to evoke the wonders and complexities of the Canadian Arctic. These pine-needle balls are also surreptitious emblems of Shepherd's own tightly knit and tiny work, itself "kept for years".

Her job, as she understood it, was to prevent students from conforming to the "approved pattern’ of life". The aurora borealis can be seen from its summits - billowing curtains of green or, more rarely, red light. Page after page, line after line, contains something as arresting as that, as plain and bracing as the water of a mountain stream. He argued instead that we are continually "embedded" in the "flesh" of the world: that we experience a constant exchange or "traffic" with our environment in ways that both exceed and inform our rational, intentional mind. Eye and foot acquire in rough walking a co-ordination that makes one distinctly aware of where the next step is to fall, even while watching sky and land.

Shepherd's writing conveys wonder in the face of these mountains because she was comfortable with uncertainty. Composed during the Second World War, the manuscript of The Living Mountain lay untouched for more than 30 years before it was finally published. Martha initially dreams of escaping the muck of the farm, but chooses ultimately to stay in her community, which offers a more satisfyingly embodied experience of life than university. Here then may be lived a life of the senses so pure, so untouched by any mode of apprehension but their own, that the body may be said to think. Imagination is haunted by the swiftness of the creatures that live on the mountain - eagle and peregrine falcon, red deer and mountain hare.I believe that I now understand in some small measure why the Buddhist goes on pilgrimage to a mountain. My aim is to highlight incredible women, whose achievements were often overlooked compared to those of their male counterparts. By Lochnagar, the whole facade is clear, sculptured in block and cleft and cornice, with which the light makes play.

It takes you away from this modern consumerist way of life and makes you think about nature, weather and being at one within yourself.

On the edge of sleep, "one neither thinks, nor desires, nor remembers, but dwells in pure intimacy with the tangible world. Shepherd's short non-fiction book The Living Mountain, written in the 1940s, [9] reflects her experiences walking in the Cairngorm Mountains. I've just begun listening to this one again and it is even more moving and profound the second time.

These novels emphasise the rural and local nature of much Scottish writing of the early 20th century modernist period and illustrate Shepherd’s important place in the modernist cultural movement known as the Scottish renaissance. Signed by Robert Macfarlane and Rose Strang, this new collector's edition brings together Shepherd's timeless prose with Strang's landscape paintings.

It is a correct but counterintuitive proposition, for we tend to think of mountains in terms of their exteriors - peaks, plateaus, cliffs. The Living Mountain reveals the visionary nature of Shepherd as a lone and intrepid hillwalker who sometimes went barefoot so she could feel the grass, mud and heather on her skin. It is a scent with body to it, fruity like old brandy, and on a wet warm day one can be as good as drunk with it.
