About this deal

Together with their record company they had commissioned mixes by Todd Terry (who had turned Everything But the Girl's " Missing" into an international club anthem). The group signed to Echo Records and released their single "Where Is the What If the What Is in Why? As a form of barter for the remix, Moloko vocalist Róisín Murphy later co-wrote and appeared on Dlugosch's " Never Enough" single, starring in the video for that release as well.

Brydon and Murphy ended their romantic relationship in 2002, just before they began work on the album. Moloko ( / m ə ˈ l oʊ k oʊ/) were an Irish-English electronic music duo formed in Sheffield, England, consisting of vocalist Róisín Murphy and producer Mark Brydon. Stevie Chick from NME wrote, " Róisín Murphy, it must be said, has a remarkable voice, a chalky, skewed howl which can twist into a purr, a cry or a sexy growl. In her review of the I Am Not a Doctor album, Heather Phares from AllMusic described it as a " techno torch song". Blending elements of electronica and dance music, they are best known for their UK top 10 singles " The Time Is Now" (2000) and " Familiar Feeling" (2003), as well as the 1999 Boris Dlugosch remix of " Sing It Back" which became an international hit.Though the album was unsuccessful, reaching only number 64 in the UK Albums Chart, a Boris Dlugosch remix of " Sing It Back", the third single from the album that originally failed to reach the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, was a huge hit, reaching number four in the UK chart and number one in the US Dance Chart. The same year, Murphy and Brydon, along with long-time Moloko guitarist Cooke, briefly interrupted their hiatus to play a select number of acoustic radio performances. Moloko toured in support of the album, opening for Garbage in UK and Ireland in January and February 1999. On 'Sing It Back', she's cast as Eartha Kitt, all unquenchable lust, sly, coquettish snarls, a luxuriant, lingering sigh. with Jools Holland, and performed a version where Murphy finished head-first inside Brydon's Hammond organ.

In 2002, Q Magazine ranked "Sing It Back" at number 905 in their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever" [10] and in 2004, the magazine featured it in their "The 1010 Songs You Must Own". They started touring as a full band along with percussionist Paul Slowly, keyboardist Eddie Stevens, and guitarist Dave Cooke.Their third album Things to Make and Do was released in the year 2000 [6] and reached number three in the UK Albums Chart. Australian music channel Max placed it at number 887 in their list of "1000 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2012.

The song experienced chart success after it was remixed by DJ Boris Dlugosch, peaking at number four in the UK in September 1999.In 2016, Moloko digitally reissued their remixes on the compilation All Back To the Mine, split into two volumes and comprising a total of 68 tracks. Murphy had started writing the lyrics while clubbing in New York City, [3] and knew the song was at heart a dance track, but the group wanted to record it in a different artistic fashion for its album version. It first appeared in its original version on Moloko's second album, I Am Not a Doctor (1998); it was released as a single on 8 March 1999, reaching number 45 on the UK Singles Chart.

Rolling Stone ranked the song at 152 in its 2022 list of the "200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time". After Moloko finished the tour, they built a home studio and recorded their second album, titled I Am Not a Doctor, which was released in 1998 in the United Kingdom. A It features Moloko vocalist Róisín Murphy dancing alone in a metallic flapper dress, accompanied by psychedelic lighting effects.Moloko's music has been described as alternative dance, [1] dance-pop, [1] experimental pop, [19] dance-punk [20] and electropop.
