LaunchControl XL now features HUI integration, which means you can use it to control the Mixer in Cubase, Logic or Pro Tools*. I bought this to help with automating dynamics, expression and vibrato for my Spitfire BBCSO plugins in Pro Tools for virtual orchestration.

To set the LaunchControl XL up as a HUI control surface in Cubase, navigate to ‘Devices’ > ‘Device Setup’ > ‘MIDI port setup’. If this was just about the smaller designs, that would be interesting enough, up to a point, but it's also about compatibility. This way I can load the rack with the effects and mapping configurations into a Live set, select the saved custom template on the Novation, map the knobs to the macros once and save it for later. In fact, if you're using the factory template, you'll probably never have to crack a manual to put the Launch Control XL to work for you, so you can spend less time reading and more time creating music. This allows these Track Control buttons to toggle the mute, solo and record-arm buttons for each track within Live, with the multicolored LEDs behind the buttons providing helpful visual cues as to which mode is currently active.In general, the overall feel of the controller is pretty good, and like the other controllers in the Launch range it seems robust, though you should be careful with those high-profile faders which will obviously be fairly delicate in your backpack. Up to a point, instant control is available, and beyond that you can create your own custom MIDI assignments and save them in the user presets on the Launch Control. im thinking of things such as EQ and Compression for starters but it could also be used to control the EQ parameters of any plugins, iZotope etc. Further parameters can then be accessed by holding down the Device button, which turns the Track Control pads into Device Bank selectors, each with its own Pan/Device knob assignments.

I have different templates on AUM and whenever I want to start a project i load the template and every control I need is on my hand. It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity that the Send knobs can't be used to control device parameters like the Pan knobs can, but that's certainly not enough of an issue to prevent us giving it our wholehearted recommendation.I also extensively use Ableton templates to save midi mappings (and other setups, channel routing, default effects, etc. As with EQ8 I have 8 bands to play with, if needed, I can map the 3 rows of 8 knobs to those bands parameters quite nicely. Novation has been busy, expanding its controller range (Launchkeys), updating previous models (Launchpad S), releasing new hardware synths (MiniNova), and reissuing old favourites (Bass Station II). And you have 8 working scenes that you could map with different cc midi even on the same synth or an app like AUM.
