About this deal

The spare wheel mounted on the rear door (andin the longer 110 and 130, the sheer distance from the driving seat to the rear window) does make it tricky to see out of the back, though. The Discovery Sport is plusher inside than many of the mainstream family SUV competition, including the Honda CR-V and the Seat Tarraco. The Evoque also has more ground clearance than most rivals and can wade through 530mm of water (80mm more than the XC40). Opting for smaller 18in or19in wheels, or selecting the Comfort setting with the optional Adaptive Dynamics adjustable suspension system does help take the edge off that, but there are still less bumpy family SUVs available, including the Lexus NX. We’d also point out that the P300e PHEV version has a slightly reduced boot capacity, but we still managed to squeeze in eight carry-on suitcases.

It looks rather expensive when you compare it with mainstream rivals such as the Peugeot 5008 andthe Skoda Kodiaq, though. There is also, handily, a version for everyone, with three body styles so you can have anything from five to eight seats. You’d expect a Land Rover model to be good off road, and sure enough the Evoque can tackle terrain that would leave the BMW X1 and the XC40 flummoxed.Overview The Land Rover Discovery Sport, especially in seven-seat form, is more practical as a family load-lugger than the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3, but those rivals are better to drive and more fuel-efficient. In our tests, the Audi Q5, the Hyundai Santa Fe, theKia Sorento and the Peugeot 5008 all fitted more carry-on cases. It's certainly not as keen to scythe through bends as the Q5 or the X3, and never feels as agile along twisting country roads as the Jaguar F-Pace.

The diesel blends into the background hum at motorway speeds, and is impressively smooth under hard acceleration. Children won't find that a problem but adults will, and it'll make your life harder if you're fitting a child seat. The Defender is a great choice for off-roading, with its easy-to-use Terrain Response system and the option of a rear differential to maximise traction. You sit higher than you do in most rivals –including the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1–and the pedals are comfortably lined up with your body. If you pay a bit extra (or opt for Autobiography trim)you'll also get a rear-view mirror that, at the touch of a button, becomes a screen showing a view from the back of the car, so you can see behind even if the car is loaded to the roof.So – like in the equally perpendicularMercedes G-Class– it doesn’t matter if you’re broad-shouldered, long-legged or tall in the body, you’ll have all the room you need in the front. However, the arrangement does make accessing the boot tricky if you're backed up to a wall or another car. Blind-spot monitoring is optional on most trims and standard onR-Dynamic SE trim, as is a clear exit monitor and a rear traffic monitor (to stop you reversinginto the path of another car). Although the Range Rover Sport is positioned as the more agile, dynamic model compared to its Range Rover sibling, it’s still a giant of an SUV.
