About this deal

A lightweight ESS shank gives the Targhee III its support, though we felt a noticeable loss of stability from previous iterations. Its soft and flexible oiled nubuck leather material is less rigid those boots with a stiffer leather upper, and the boot flex is noticeably softer. This shoe is also one of the widest in our review, so despite the inventive wrap-around heel lacing system that snugs up around the ankle, we could not get a very good fit with medium-volume feet. Driven by a passion for life outside, KEEN is a values-led, independently owned brand from Portland, Oregon, that’s on a mission to create original and versatile products, improve lives, and inspire outside adventure.

With excellent protection and stability, and reliable waterproofness, the latest version of these classics are well worth stepping into. And despite the lower weight, the Salomon still retains impressive comfort, toe protection, and grip. The Targhee III is a new generation of boot that builds on the award-winning successes of its predecessors, but with an updated look and new materials. We use marketing, analytical and functional cookies as well as similar technologies to give you the best experience. For more serious day hiking and backpacking, there are a plethora of models we prefer over the Durand including the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX.

My primary complaint is the II bottom plate is not stiff enough for bouldering with a backpack with the support I like. But for the uses the Targhee is intended for—moderate day hikes and short backpacking trips—this isn’t a deal breaker for us. On our boots, we can see a number of scuff marks around the ankle, which means the padding was well placed and doing its job.The soft nubuck upper does not provide as much rigidity as full-grain leather models, so side to side stability suffers a bit instead of comfort here. Feel free to ask me any questions or provide feedback and I'll be happy to respond in the comment section below if it's within my knowledge. While the ankle is well-secured, though, the rest of the foot moves around quite easily, as it has one of the roomiest fits of any shoe we tested. If you’ll be hiking mostly in dry climates or want a more breathable shoe, both the mid-height and low-top boots are offered in mesh-heavy Vent versions that do away with the Keen. Prolonged exposure to water allows seeping water into the toe box, though this was after the 5-minute water submersion test was completed.

Our tester had a standard-sized foot if not slightly on the wide end, and although the heel and middle section of the boot felt normal, he was swimming in the toe box.Targhee VENT: The upper material is mesh panels (synthetic), please keep in mind that this style does not have a KEEN. We like the well-thought-out traditional lacing system used on the Targhee III, as it employs an additional strap that locks the heel in place for a snug fit around the ankle.

Sloshing through puddles and streams, our feet stayed dry as long as we respected the 4-inch water resistance height. Because the Targhee IIIs don’t offer the support or rigidity for rugged hiking over steep or rocky terrain, our slips occurred from the ankles and not the soles. pounds for a US men's size 11, the Targhee III Low is not the heaviest shoe in this review but is far from the lightest. We tested the Keen Targhee III Waterproof Mid, and Keen also makes the Targhee III in a waterproof low-top version that sacrifices some ankle support.Stability over rough terrain is very limited, and therefore we recommend keeping these boots on trail. Similar to its predecessor, this contender offers a good blend of comfort and traction in such a light package, impressing reviewers again with features like a toe bumper. This outsole performs well enough on wet and dry trails, with average traction thanks to its medium-sized lug pattern. I have come across other hikers who have had the same experience with the foot bed breaking down after a number of months.
