About this deal

With a prologue detailing the last thoughts of Princess Diana as she lies dying in the wreck of her broken Mercedes, Ash initially seems like it will be Herbert at his most outrageous. James Herbert didn't so much create a hero in this dark, evil tale, no, he told a story about the human condition itself. Herbert's vivid descriptions and gripping storytelling have made this series a must-read for any fan of horror fiction. He left school at 15 and studied at Hornsey College of Art, joining the art department of John Collings, a small advertising agency.

Born in London, [3] Herbert was the son of Herbert Herbert, [4] a stall-holder at London's Brick Lane Market. While Herbert is known primarily for his horror and fantasy novels, he has also ventured into other genres. So the global cabal which runs the castle (possible spoiler: this global cabal is EVIL) brings in paranormal investigator David Ash to look for the source of this activity. He was the subject of a This is Your Life programme in 1995, when he was surprised by Michael Aspel at the London Dungeon. In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. Covering films, TV shows, books, comics, games, merch, and more, SFX Magazine is published every month. I went back to class, feeling sorry for myself, but mainly wondering why I had been so severely punished for wanting to read a book.

Similarly, Comraich – with its wildcat-infested grounds, precarious drops, subterranean caves, and dungeon-like ‘care’ facilities – is a fine setting for a ghost story. The ghost story appears entirely incidental, having little purpose other than as motivation to get Ash to the castle in the first place. It's funny and unique, and Creed is a brilliant character, but as a horror novel it does fall a little flat.Overall with Herbert I seem to have immortalised his early writings like The Rats, The Fog and Fluke as none of his later writings have had much of an effect on me, if at all!

Ash features one of Herbert's best-loved characters, David Ash, the sceptical paranormal detective, first encountered in The Ghosts of Sleath and Haunted both No. The book seems to get going but then it doesn’t and there are too many lose ends which were slightly frustrating.

We were allowed half-an-hour of reading before 'lights out' at boarding school and after the assistant headmaster had roamed the corridors doing his nightly checks I whipped the boxset out and took one of the books to read. Herbert released a new novel virtually every year from 1974 to 1988, wrote six novels during the 1990s and released three new works in the 2000s.

Famous for his 'Rats' series, Herbert's unique blend of horror and fantasy has made him a favorite among fans of general fiction. This is in short a page-turner, a very entertaining read that will have you hesitating before turning off the bedside lamp.

A rollicking, retro romp of a horror novel that reminds me of how much fun the genre was back in the 80s. Probably not your expected average Herbert horror novel, it came at a change in his direction of style. Ash imagines Princess Diana and her secret son as well as Lord Lucan, Colonel Gaddafi and Robert Maxwell living together in a Scottish castle.
