About this deal

Armed with a patchwork sack of necessary tools for the journey, Jack and his friends set off for the island of, Blowyernose. The book focuses on a range of issues to develop children who can read into children who do read, including extending reading with proficient readers, engaging disengaged readers, sustaining interest in reading in the transition from primary to secondary, and the importance of oracy in reading.

The rhyme also provides opportunities for children to apply their phonics and a pace for reading aloud. A whole generation of new authors and illustrators are showcased, with books like Dogger, The Hunger Games, and Twilight making their first appearance. A set of Thinking Hat resources have kindly been contributed by Peter Fogarty (see Resources below). Lovely rhyming story with lots to discuss in the pictures (love the endpapers and the Troll hiding in the wrong book.I especially like that children will learn a little about problem solving too as Jack and his crew use various items from granny's patchwork sack to solve the scary encounters they have along the way. He leaves on his journey with his multicultural crew; they come across many dangers but are saved by the contents of the patchwork sack Jacks granny gave them. Lots of different exciting resources about thinking hats, ranging from about classic books to detention sheets and guided reading worksheets.

Enjoy these other stories from Julia Donaldson and David Roberts: Tyrannosaurus Drip, The Troll, The Flying Bath and The Cook and the King. The book is at its best when read aloud, as you really appreciate the rhyme at the end of each sentence, which in turn helps the story to flow from page to page. When Jack’s granny falls ill with the moozles, the doctor tells him that the only thing that will cure her is the fruit of the mysterious flumflum tree which grows on a faraway island, the Isle of Blowyernose. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads.
