About this deal

The Weasley’s really are the best family, the 9 of them together with Harry and Hermione, having dinner, is just what Harry needs.

As always there’s so much to talk about and I decided to continue with another of my “My thoughts about this book” reviews. On Christmas, the night of the ball, Ron wears his awful dress robes and spends the entire night staring at Hermione, who is there as Viktor Krum's date. On halloween night, the Goblet of Fire spits out the names of the champions who will compete in the Triwizard Tournament; along with Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, and Viktor Krum, Harry Potter is selected. The first 3 were fun but I felt like I had already "been there done that" as they were pretty faithfully adaptated for the screen. The first task approaches, and Harry is fretful; during the weighing of the wands, a reporter named Rita Skeeter accosts Harry and interviews him for what she says is a story about the tournament, but instead publishes a sappy, exaggerated article about Harry's tragic past. Reaching out to his father figures, it is apparent to all that Voldemort is gathering strength, and Harry represents the best chance to conquer him; that is, if he can get through a year at Hogwarts complete with teenaged love and angst and new magical tasks awaiting him as he furthers his education. The tasks of the Triwizard tournament captured most of the thrills of the book, particularly the second water-based task where the merpeople were suitably creepy (now we know why none of the kids go swimming in the summer term!

As Harry, Ron and Hermione entered their fourth year of Hogwarts, arguably their most challenging and intense year yet, I checked my mail box to see if my invite had finally arrived. There was also a choppy feel to the film, as if Steve Kloves struggled to properly condense the book into a two-hour film.

Unlike the first two films, this did not attempt to condescend as much to small children in the audience. I finally felt the close rapport between Dumbledore and Harry in this film that was missing in the previous three HP flicks. The night after the game, a crowd of Death Eaters, followers of Voldemort who escaped punishment, torture four Muggles by levitating them in the air. Even if it’s against Dumbledore because he wants Harry to rest and feel better instead of recounting events. The next day, Harry is invited to attend the Quidditch World Cup—a major sporting event for witches and wizards for a game played on flying brooms—with his friends, but on the night of the World Cup, pandemonium breaks loose, and the sign of the evil Lord Voldemort appears in the sky.

In which Mad-Eye Moody jinxes dustbins, Mr Weasley hustles off to sort out the mess, Mrs Weasley takes the children to the train station via Muggle taxis, and Harry, Ron and Hermione meet old friends and enemies on the train. He rescues Ron from the lake, while also saving the Beauxbatons champion Fleur Delacour's sister out of fear that she will drown if Fleur cannot rescue her in time. Then again his character is consistent too because as an Auror he saw what dark wizards are capable of and he’s totally right when he says that they won’t play nice and fair. Harry is entered into a dangerous tournament against his will, and if he wants to survive the year, he will have to learn more magic than ever before, keep his eyes open to any signs of evil lurking in his midst, and rely on the support of his friends. Writing for The New Yorker, Joan Acocella noted that "where the prior volumes moved like lightning, here the pace is slower, the energy more dispersed. Harry’s blood is forcibly taken and used to revive Voldemort, who takes a human form for the first time in 13 years. It follows Harry Potter, a wizard in his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the mystery surrounding the entry of Harry's name into the Triwizard Tournament, in which he is forced to compete.
