He’s placed in DI Devon Andrews Gang Intelligence Unit, his target is DS Barry Cleaver - does he have a connection to Roman? Not everyone believes his hero status is as deserved as the public may have been led to believe, and that, in a nutshell, is the outline of this book.Sketty quickly gains a reputation as an excellent team player on his new team, taking down the untouchables of London’s drug gangs. And I know what an imposition it is for you to come all this way to see some curious old man, which is why you’ll find that the money I promised should already be in your account, if you’d like to check. Although of the book is Chris Sketty's account of the fateful events of 14 years earlier, the transition from his past to the present days works seamlessly. Teller has paid me the princely sum of a thousand pounds to come out to his mansion in the Oxfordshire countryside and talk to him, which is actually less than the going rate.

Chris Sketty has been transferred to a new unit, not entirely of his own choosing, and to make matters worse he is undercover. The man addressing me in a soft Edinburgh accent is Dr Ralph Teller, a short, round individual of about seventy, who reminds me in appearance of Richard Attenborough, the owner of Jurassic Park in the original movie, and the one responsible for all those dinosaurs running loose and misbehaving.

As Iversson launches a quest to look for answers, so does Detective Sergeant John Gallan, who is looking to solve the mystery behind the death of a doorman at Fowler’s club.

The book moves on at great pace and When Sketty is part of an undercover mission that doesn’t turn out the way it’s planned we are left wondering does Sketty know more about what happened than he is letting on and is he really the hero of the hour. At the time Chris was working undercover to expose a senior officer there who was suspected of being part of a right-wing cell run by Kalian Roman – a mysterious Keyser Söze type figure. With the past being Sketty's own personal account of the fateful events that happened 15 years earlier. Battling through numerous twists and an explosive ending, and not knowing who he can trust, Chris, a man with a limp and a destroyed life, is now on a mission to reveal the truth, whatever the cost.As both men separately undertake their investigations, they unravel a ploy which may cost them their lives. Set in the present day Sketty is forced to relive past events which are revealed through flashbacks. And the combination of time, determination and very large sums of money is a particularly effective means of finding things out. Present: Now no longer with the Force, Chris Sketty has since lost everything that mattered to him, his family and his career. In fact, the whole story has a distinct The Usual Suspects feel with its flashbacks, interrogations and unreliable witnesses.

Henry Forbes, her former boyfriend who reported her disappearance at the time, is now a university lecturer. We can only judge his version of the story which was, under duress, vividly told to Doctor Ralph Teller. Blackmailed by the mysterious man, Sketty spends the night telling the story of what really happened during the course of the events leading up to the attack, the role he played and how the events really transpired. One minute you think it’s all unravelling with the mountain of lies and the next you think Chris is on the right side despite the very fine line of the law he treads.

Dr Teller has a surprisingly cheerful demeanour considering that he suffers from an advanced and degenerative form of multiple sclerosis, which has left him permanently confined to a wheelchair, and will, in his own words, finish him off for good before too long. But to those who know him well like detective Ray Mason, Alastair is a ruthless serial killer who targets young women. The main question that remains unanswered throughout the book is whether former detective Chris Sketty is a good guy who happens to find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time or is he part of something more sinister.
