First: A big thank you to Goodreads Giveaways for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. c. is smart, the dog's perspective is really interesting (and very touching), and there are so many creeps around that the suspense is pretty solid throughout.I won't go into the plot line as others have covered that, but I will say it ranks up there with the best of his work and I recommend it to anyone as the themes used and the relationships related to current events, and the ever loveable dynamo that is Joe/Felix is just perfect and it got the ending I wanted. The story follows Captain Tom Lingard, the recurring protagonist of The Lingard Trilogy, who was on his way to help a native friend regain his land when he falls in love with a married woman whose yacht he saves from foundering. When a dangerous and hungry shark suddenly appears, Rainbow Fish must decide: Should he risk losing his new friends – maybe even his life – for the little stranger? Bettina first saw Joe at an animal shelter in Tijuana, Mexico, when she was doing a story about Mexican street dogs. It will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived without love and will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain.

Joe was born on the streets of Mexico and leads an unconditional life unconditionally loving his humans. Story of Joe/Felix; a Mexican street dog, turned boyhood companion, turned bad ass DEA drug sniffer, turned shot dog who eventually gets adopted by a reporter who tells his story. I did, however, very much enjoy the chapters with Teddy, another claimant to Felix’s ownership, and Wade. He admits that he wrestled with its abandonment at first but confesses that the momentum of other pieces made it easier and easier to leave this difficult work behind - and yet he never fully "lost sight" of The Rescue which remained "a dark speck in the misty distance" as the years and pages "stretched wide between" him and his deserted project.Such a small thing, but until that point, neither my wife nor I knew whether he was capable of that.
