When the idea of adapting the movie of Billy Elliot was first suggested, Hall explained that he thought it was the “worst idea I’d ever heard”. Billy arrives for his first private ballet lesson bringing with him things to inspire a special dance for the audition ("Dear Billy (Mum's Letter)"). Following the cinema releases, the filmed live musical was made available on DVD and BluRay, and was screened on American television through PBS’ Great Performances. What I also like is that, at least in the version I saw, there are no members of the creative team hanging around at the end of the evening to wax lyrical about the process of putting the musical together. The production reopened on 9 October 2021 at the Teatre Victòria in Barcelona, where it ran until 22 May 2022.

This production was produced by the original English producers (Universal Stage Productions, Working Title Films, Old Vic Productions) and by Joop van den Ende Theaterproducties/ Stage Entertainment. It'll keep your toe tapping, otherwise this Special Edition DVD isn't worth making too much noise about.
